Hi my name’s Maria and I’m from Western Massachusetts.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens and currently have my first and only chicken which I got about 2 months ago when I joined this page.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I just have one chicken - a hen named Bertha. She is a meat bird but she is a pet, not to be eaten.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have a Cornish X who was rescued from being slaughtered at about 7 weeks. She is now about 4 months old.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The humor in everything she does is so entertaining to me! She has so much personality and you can usually read her thoughts by her actions. She is a very simple and also sweet creature!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to be outside and I love all animals. I house sit, farm sit, and pet sit.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I don’t have other pets at the moment. I work in an elementary school during the school year and waitress in the summer.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found this community with a simple google search and there was so much great information that I joined right away! I want to raise my chicken as healthily
as possible.
