I need some advice on this. My 10 week old pullet that I've had for two weeks has one eye that looks glued shut and crusty. The feathers around it appear matted. I just noticed it today though yesterday, the same eye did appear to be closed more and a bit squinty. Any thoughts? I can't get to the vet until this afternoon but I'm really hoping it isn't something serious. I'm also worried (because I'm a worrier!) that it could be caught by humans; I am seeing family tonight (including my pregnant sister) and I sure wouldn't want to spread anything around. Please help!

First, if it is with any other birds separate it. Most chicken disease can not be transmitted to humans, however disinfect yourself after handling the birds. A good hand washing is always appropriate after handling healthy birds or working in the coop. If I have sick animals I usually also rinse my hands in rubbing alcohol as an added precaution.

there are several things in could be however the treatment would be the same anti-biotics in the water or shot into the breast, then you will have people say probiotics (which is good if the problem is bacterial, and also it will counter the negative effect of the anti-biotics). Electrolytes to help keep strength up (I use pedolyte instead of water). If there is any rasping or trouble breathing, vinegar in the water.

These are the steps most of us take for all problems, those of us who can not afford a vet.

However 90 % of the time the vet is going to do one or all of the above.

Oh the feed store can point you to the right antibiotics.

Thanks for the advice.

I took her to the vet and unfortunately it was coryza. She had also lost weight over the last day or so and was too ill to likely survive any treatment. Plus, I didn't want to risk her being a carrier so I had the vet euthanize her.

A chicken owner for two weeks and already one death. I'm not feeling great right now....
