The hen with the horrible swollen peri ocular swelling that I posted a couple of weeks ago has not responded to antibiotics and daily flushing and eye ointment - the vet has suggested removing the eye and surrounding tissue or possible euthanasia as leaving it will get worse and the other hens are likely to attack the eye. However, if she has only one eye she might be more vulnerable to attack from the flock anyway. Does anyone have this experience - how did your hen and the rest of the flock react to the eye removal? Many thanks

I have a hen who is blind in one eye. She can getlost if she gets out of the yard away from the coop, but mostly she does pretty well free ranging around the coop yard. She follows the others, and she can find food, water, and her nest box okay, but she is low in the pecking order. Can you post a picture of the eye? Do you see white or yellowish pus in the eye? Here is a thread about removal of pus in an infected eye: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/983003/tumor-or-infection-or

Thanks, the vet lanced it and removed from pus 12 days ago but what is visible is quite fleshy .

Sorry yet another photo- the eye itself is still intact but is not visible in this picture as this fleshy bulge is pushing it back.

It looks like more pus has accumulated on the eye, that probably needs to be removed. Has there ever been any bad odor around the head, or symptoms of a respiratory disease, such as cough, sneeze, noisy breathing or rattles, or nasal drainage? Did you treat her with antibiotics, and if so, which one?
