Brooder is ready except for the heat source. I am headed to Home Depot in the morning. Need suggestion on which kind of bulb to buy. Thanks!!

You might want to get a red bulb to reduce the chances of feather picking/pecking. Also, it doesn't disrupt their day/night cycle so when they go to a coop they will be on a "normal" schedule. With our first chicks, we used white light and some of the chicks started picking at one another. Also, when the roos started crowing they had no concept of "too early" or "too late"! The next time around, a friend told us about the red light, and these problem were greatly reduced. Of course, all young cockerels are enamored of their own voice right after they learn to crow, but at least the roos in our second batch would knock it off within an hour or so after dark. My husband is much more "fond" (i.e. doesn't threaten to process them on a daily basis) of them than of our first roos!

That's basically what I use for my coturnix, except I use the 100w yellow bug light bulbs. I doubt it makes a difference with coturnix, but the softer yellow light is better on the feed monsters eyes. Other species of quail may need different color lights, but coturnix chicks do not pick/peck each other to death in a properly set up brooder. Other quail species, may need special color lights.

This morning there is still just the one chick in there and none of the other eggs look to have holes or any cracks. How long do I leave the chick in there ...it looks still slightly damp...its pecking around in there and pecking on the other eggs.

I don't know why I didn't notice it zipping...it was up in the corner so maybe thats why. Its funny both chicks have found each other already and are cuddling! LOL

I leave'em in just till there mostly fluffy. Then quickly snatch them up and get them under a 95 deg. ish brooder. Its a good idea to dip there beak into the water too. Sprinkle gbs around on the floor and in a dish, they'll find it fine... Good luck, Bill
