One less dog in the neighborhood!

You did what you had to do...I have done the same thing but the dog here was not friendly whatsoever. It never got the chance to kill any of my girls. I warned the owner three times after chasing it home that it was trying to dig into my run and was chasing the girls. Then it came back and I shot it. Plain and simple.

I know it is not an easy thing to do but it is the owner's fault not the dog and not yours. As dog owners we are morally and in some cases legally obligated to be responsible for our pets. When we fail to teach our dogs or train them properly, it sets the dog up for failure and misbehaving...in some cases for being killed.

If you cannot control your animal or take the time to do so then you should not have the animal. I would contact the SPCA or Humane Society about her hoarding and collecting animals...let them know how many she has and the situation. take some pics of them if they look malnourished and are within your line of sight. People like that make me sick!

Thank you so much! Truth is, I'm not offended by any of the quarterbacks... they just haven't been in a situation like this, so are mostly speculating about how they'd react. You have to walk a mile in someone else's shoes, right?

I'm OK with the decision it took me a year to make, hard as it was.

I posted comment back on #9 just saying " I am sorry you had to do that." Some folks were shocked that others and myself say things like this.

I live in a very urban place. I have had labs and currently have a golden retriever. I was shocked and upset by what I read, but I read it thoroughly, and could tell this was not a city situation like where I live.

Here we call animal control, they zoom out and pick up the dog, the owner pays $150 to bail it out and that deters the owner from being careless in the future. It is far easier, but I know rural folks don't have this easy option. Therefore, it was best to keep that comment to myself. That doesn't mean I would want to kill a dog, nor did KHayward. My commenting on something like what I would have done differently with my city perspective is not helpful nor comforting in this difficult and painful situation. She did what anyone else should do living out in the country when something like this happens. City or not, I believe she did what was right in a bad situation.

Again, I am truely sorry you had to do that.

That's what made it so hard; if the dog had been aggressive toward me I'd have shot it the first time it killed my birds. Because it was friendly, I gave it 6 chances to stay away.

As for calling the SPCA or Humane Society, there's nothing to report. She has a lot of animals, but they are all well fed and healthy. She just can't keep them on her property. In fact, when DH got home tonight he walked in and said, "Do you know we have a goat in the front yard?"

I've also looked into the deed restrictions, because there is a clause about keeping an appropriate number of animals for the amount of land you own, but the Board is generally toothless. Other than sending her a letter, assuming that you can convince them to do that, there isn't much else it will do.

I am a city girl but dream of the country life (right outside of town so I can stil go to the mall). I don't like what you did to the dog but I completely understand and accept that you had to do it. It always surprises me in the midwest that NOONE has fences. Here in west everyone has fences. I believe good fences make good neighbors. Even if I had a lot of property I would have some or most fenced. (Preferably a 7ft cinder block wall). So definately the replies here are different from city to country. Me, I would have driven to take the dog to some kind of shelter somewhere, but I can't kill mice in the house.

I dont think a responsible rescue would adopt a "friendly"dog out that is known to have killed other animals before.
" Sure the dog is goo with kids, it only kills chickens out of the blue" ONCE A KILLER ALWAYS A KILLER

Hello...Labs are BIRD dogs! They are bred to hunt birds. I have owned & raised many labs for hunting BIRDS. They wouldn't & never have turned on anyone just because they have killed a bird. Again...That is what they are bred for.

Hard call for you.
Can you not call the Ranger and have the dog taken away? Then there is always the chance the dog will be rehomed.
I have trained our large terrier to leave the chickwens and ducks alone...so it isnt impossible. Feel sorry for your dilemma.

How bout you come to my house next, i have 2 dogs on the left of me that need shot and three on the other side that need shot. They bark at everything that moves, including me who theyve seen for years and still arent used to. We let our dog out and she is ALWAYS tied and she never barks, even at the dogs who bark at her. I found a good old leather whip scares them and does no harm. But if they ever killed anything of mine...well im not sure what id do.

Actually this reminds me of a dog, a lab also, that my one uncle had years ago. They lived out in the middle of nowhere. No houses, no neighbors, no roads, just woods. So their dog really roamed free because there was no one to bother. Well it started to chase deer and a hunter shot it one day for doing so. I remember everyone was ok with it, they had the attitude of, well it was chasing deer, so it got shot. They werent shocked or stunned at least i dont remember much, i was only about 5 when it happened.
