I got a call today from a lady who has a lone baby duck she is needing a new home for. A common friend of ours told her I had ducks and I would probably be glad to take the baby,..which I am because I love my duckies! Only thing is I have never raised a lone duckling,......is there any advice any of you duck people are willing to offer??? She is supposed to call me tomorrow and we will meet somewhere for me to pick up the duck,..any and all advice is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Be sure to have a 250F heat lamp on hand, some waterfowl starter/flock raiser, and some bedding on hand. I have heard of people putting stuffed animals and mirrors in the brooder. Good luck.

We/ve been in the one duck situation a couple of times. I would recommend the mirror and a stuffed toy, at least for a few days. Also, you can spend lots of time one-on-one with the duckling. Should be able to introduce it gradually to your flock after the appropriate quarantine period, but do so under supervision. It usually takes us about 2 weeks of working with them to get the old ones to accept the new one.

Also, you want a 250 watt heat lamp bulb; red is best to not mess with their photoperiod.

Good luck!

I recently raised a lone chicken- and may soon have a lone duckling too. This is what I did to keep the chicken happy- So I will be re-using the ostrich toy for the duckling.

Becasue the legs hang down it the chicken spent a lot of time standing between the legs- Also because the legs moved when the chicken did- it made the chicken think his freind was alive- not just a piece of stuffed inanimate material.

I did have to put a rubber band around the ostriches head to keep it hanging up though- as chicken did keep knocking it down- And when that happened- I would hear about it until his friend was standing up again.

Well the duckie is finally home and settled in,...it is a sweetie! Thanks everyone for the ideas,..the duck came with its own teddy bear,..which is so cute seeing a duck loving on a stuffed animal,..

Now I just wonder what breed it is,...looks like a Khaki Campbell but has eye stripes,...also it came from Tractor Supply,..
