I’ve ordered from hatcheries, this is what I got.Well that's not right. I would cull chickens with unusual anomalies.
Standard of Perfection. What does SOP mean? (New chicken owners here!)
Bingo. Hatcheries are quantity over quality. Why cull chicks and spend time improving a line when they could just sell every chick and make money? That's their way of operation it seems. So consistency of a breed and not SOP is not a option for hatcheries? And it's all about volume in spite of keeping the traits that identify each breed?
To me that's unacceptable. It does explain some new so-called breeds. I have yet to buy any chicks from hatcheries because of some the people that post there chicks and chickens on here from hatcheries.
Buying a chicken breed shouldn't be a guessing game. But that's just me.
Does McMurray hatchery follow that principle like Cackle hatchery?Bingo. Hatcheries are quantity over quality. Why cull chicks and spend time improving a line when they could just sell every chick and make money? That's their way of operation it seems.
Cackle Hatchery seems to pay more attention to their breeding stock from what I've seen though. They even carry exhibition quality birds in some breeds.
Not with their Bantam Cochins. Can't speak on their other breeds.Does McMurray hatchery follow that principle like Cackle hatchery?
I see what your talking about. Not with their Bantam Cochins. Can't speak on their other breeds.
This particular representation comes to mind. It is an absolutely AWFUL example for a BC. If you cropped the feet out of the pic - I would NEVER guess it's a Cochin.
