We purchased 4 - 3 day old baby chicks two months ago. 2 Silkies, 1 RIR LF and 1 BLR Wyandotte Bantam. 3 out 4 get along great but our BLR is something else. I picked her/him because when at the feed store (it was super cold in there) I put my hand into the cage and the BLR jumped right into my hand. I tried putting it down 3 x's because I was reaching for another breed but she/he just kept jumping back in I'm guessing for warmth. I assumed she was super friendly to do that so I decided on her instead. She was fine for the first month but now she is just rotten! We've had to separate her for this past month. She resides confined in the same area as the others except on the other side of a wire mesh by herself. We tried to knock her down in the pecking order so she wasn't so rotten by secluding her. We have been mainstreaming her the last 3 weeks. She is allowed with the others while being supervised 4 x's a day. We've been allowing her to sleep with the others at night for the past week but only because I'm a very light sleeper and can here them. She will peck at the others and pull feathers. She is now going after eyeballs. She is the smallest so she constantly does sneaks attacks on the others. She is always starting stuff. The others are just happy chickens and she is just plain rotten!!! Hubby keeps saying we are gonna have to get rid of her and then in the next breath she is fine and eating right along with them!? Is she a rooster? Is she just plain weird of the standard? They are still inside because last night was 37 here and they are cold at 60 so we put up with them being inside. They are in a trampoline box that's about 10 sq feet but is that not big enough for their stimulation at their age? We take them out once a day for about an hour or so in a fenced yard outback. They are on sand in their box and have a big bowl of dirt for dust bathing. They have a screen over the box so they have plenty of ventilation and just today (for the third time so far) I did completely remove all the sand and add a new batch for safety purposes of smell and what not. We feed them a soft version of their food once or twice a day which is a loved treat for them. We try holding her once a day but she is so frantic and breaths so heavy we don't want to give her a heart attack.... yet she'll eat out of our hands? She is so freakishly annoying, cute and weird all at the same time! Am I doing something wrong or is she just plain rotten??? She is one of my babies so I would like to keep her but I don't want her secluded from the others so if we have to give away to be happy we will. Thanks for all your help!

You can see my two silkies dustbathing together. My RIR is eating and my BLR is on the right.

sounds like you already have them spoiled rotten. haha does it act like that when they are allowed outside? it actually sounds bored to me. give them something new to do. are they on chick grit? then give them a head of cabbage to pick on and play with. i was quite surprised when i gave mine an apple at one month and they ate the hole thing. as far as taming. put it in your hand and cover it with the other hand it may struggle for a while but it will calm down and relax then know your hands are a safe place to be. try to do this a couple times a day. and dont grab it from above thats predator. scoop it up from under. byw, i had to make a place on the apple to let them get started.

Just a thought - can you separate her so she can't see the other birds? I had a bully or two I've done that with - one was an eye pecker too. Anyway, she was like a new bird when reintroduced - completely 'new' to the group because she couldn't be seen by the others and totally lost her place in the pecking order. Good luck. She is still young too, may be a roo or just an attitude laden girl.

Also, with the bored factor, roosts at small heights and hanging old cd's by a string for them to peck on. Also if they have grit a chunk of dirt with grass attached for them to pick at while in their brooder.

Thank you guys SO Much! Gonna try all these ideas tomorrow! I really think she's beautiful and is so super sweet when she's not being annoyingly deviant lol! I really would like to break her and keep her so we will try all these ideas and hope for the best! We thought too that part of this was boredom and hoped if nothing else she would change once being outside permanetely. We shall see. Thank You for the responces!!! :)

We did seperate him/her about a week ago. I have to say this rotten bird (I'm learning) is so sweet on every level! She will sit in my lap for 45+ mins., eat out of my hand. She runs towards my hand when I put food or water (especially treats) in the cage. She sings to us! So cute! She will sing and talk to us when we stop in passing to talk with her. She is absolutely adorable!!! Just don't try to restrain him/her,....that's when all panic breaks loose. Grabbing, touching her wings is a no-no. Rubbing her head and crop is fine.? We broke down and put her with the others yesterday (outside) and that lasted for about 10 mins. 5 chest bumps later on one of the silkies, a feather pull on the other for spite and a down right wrestling hold on our LF RIR that made her shriek was enough to remove her and return her to her cage. She/he was puffing feathers and head bouncing off them!? I just don't get it? She/he also bite my hubby (not bad) 3 times yesterday in attack mode but has yet to bite me? I think it's a roo? The smart thing to do is rehome it before it hurts one of my children (she/he is only 2 months old) but she/he is so darn sweet when and only when it's in a cage by itself! It's so weird!!! UHG!!! What to do?
