Found one of my original 3 hens dead in the pen this morning. Nothing indicating she was sick so I assume it was the 115-117 degree weather we have been having. Flock looks good. Has had fresh water, food, shade, and they range around the back yard dusting them selves and picking at the grass. Is it common to lose birds when it gets that hot? She was 9 months old and a very big bird compared to the others. Hope it cools down soon.

Didn't think I would be sad but she was one of my favorites (Barred Rock) and would come to me as soon as she seen me every day. Seems like its always the favorites that go first....

So sorry to hear this, she was quite young. We do get attached to them, and they to us.

People worry about the cold in winter, but heat can be much harder on them, especially the larger ones.
