I know how you feel! Frank came in from feeding our girls and he told me we lost one of RIR's. So we are down to 51 hens. What stinks it was one that had all her feathers and looked healthy. I know that it's part of farm life but it doesn't make it any easier.:thun

She might have just been trying to "check that space out". Chickens are very curious sometimes, and it can get them into trouble.

I have a t.v. cart mine sit on, with the bottom board no more than 4 inches off the ground, and I caught them squishing their fat little bodies under there one day to see what it was all about. Crazy girls.

I am so so sorry to hear of your sweet girl. :aww
hugs to you

allig8r,
As you know I have the same setup. Just yesterday, Josephine my RIR was sticking her head out and looking at me when I opened the door. One of my banties actually made it all the way through one time.

So Sorry for your loss. :aww

Wow, I'm very sorry for your loss. That must have been pretty awful to find. As mentioned earlier, she was probably being curious...they're always finding something to investigate or peck at, it seems.

It's hard to explain to "other people" sometimes, but whether it's a dog, cat, chicken, fish, or something else, it can be very difficult...to the point that it surprises even us.

I'm sorry, I just had 2 of my hens fall over for no apparent reason. (Barred Rock and a sebright) Sometimes it's really weird how they do the stuff they do.
