One of my two ducks were killed today by a neighborhood dog that got loose

Kleonaptra: I agree the dogs are not to blame. The owner of the dogs that got my ducks paid no attention to the dogs, even when she say them leave the yard and knew full well it was illegal. The dog was a German Shepherd and she seemed to think a 2 foot fence would keep it in. The judge was very clear that a 6 foot fence was the minimum that would work. She just did not care enough to act on the situation. It was easier to pretend it was not a problem.

(I will disagree on the cats--unless you have the only trained cats in the world. Cats take out baby rabbits, full-grown rabbits and millions of birds in the United States. Enough said--we both know how the other feels now and this is a very emotional subject that is rarely rationally discussed.)

My Duck is currently alone due to his mate flying away :( I am looking for a new duck which takes priority - get anew one asap :) This happen to me before when his other friend flew away

When you get your new duck will it be a mallard? if so I'd clip one wing to keep it home. Poor guy is going to get a complex if his mates keep flying off.

Well, they are trained a little. We rescue birds as well and my cats know not to attack birds. Usually they catch mice or rats in my feed shed and for that I - and my ducks - are extremely grateful.

Rabbits are a worse pest than cats in Australia Im afraid. We go to great measures to cut their numbers. I do understand your position, years ago when I lived in suburbia I kept rabbits as pets and I know they are lovely creatures. Still, now I am in a rural area I do what needs to be done, and the thought of a horse breaking a leg in a rabbit burrow gives me terrors.

We go to great lengths to ensure our cats do not affect the wild life, as balance is the goal for me as the overseer here. We have many different species living in harmony.

Your story of the german shepard reminds me of a fella at our old place. His mare - with young foal at foot - kept getting out to come a visit my stallion. She had to walk up a main road to get to us and I had to start keeping him up the back in a yard with bigger fences to avoid injury. The guys solution was to tie a rope across the broken fence. Of course, she kept getting out. Animal control ended up taking them away.
