Not a wheezing, labored sound but more like a higher pitch whistle.
Is this normal?
Or is this an indication of illness?

Is the chicken making that sound while breathing? If so, it is most likely a sign of illness or some problem.

On the other hand, we have a little bantam rooster that makes a whistle sound as a warning - frequently. He also does some funny breathing sounds that I attribute to his hyper nature. :)

You know how chickens make the kind of buk-buk-buk sound while they're out and about?
This one makes sort of makes a high pitch version of that.

Has it always sounded that way? If its new it may be a problem with an infestion or something but if its always been different maybe it is a deformity?

Did you find out what the whistling sound was? Did it stop on its own? One of mine has just started like this!
