Thought I would share a few pics

THese are some of our Blue Columbian Brahmas. We have a very nice Light Brahma Rooster over them to improve type. They are very nice but I feel they need a little size and type.

She is now a pet/egg layer due to the curling feathers.

This was our primary rooster we have since moved to a Buff Laced over Gold Laced hens.

The Buff Rooster on the left was culled do to a straight come, he was the only one we have ever had. He came the original breeders we bought. He was good looking but no straight comb for breeding.

First off bumpercarr, I like the type better than a lot of project birds you see. They don't appear to show the strong Cochin influence that some do, nor the plain Jane generic build at the other end of the spectrum. Both could stand more width ,body and skull, and that may come some as they mature.

Vulture hocked birds do tend to have heavier footfeathers, but as long as the hocks stay clean, no worries.

Thanks! I'm hoping that they will heavy out as they grow up. As chicks, I thought they were both too slight, now it seems she's starting to really build the chest that I like. We'll just have to wait and see. Seems like all of the growth has been going up rather than out. Thanks for your thoughts!

BigMedicine, I have a breeding question. I've tried using the chicken calculator, but I'm not really clear on what the results tell me. If I were to breed this cockerel (blue/gold partridge) back to a buff hen, what would my results look like? And if I bred one of the chicks from this combo back to the cock, what would they look like? What if I added a buff cock to the equation? You're the expert on this breeding stuff, so I'm interested in your opinion.

The first generation cross between pencilled(partridge) and columbian looks much more columbian with a little extra specs of pencilling showing. There will likely be some variation on the base color, possibly some showing a lttle deeper gold versus buff. Now if your male is blue, which by the photos, I'm not completely convinced, 1/2 the chicks should be blue.

Breeding one of these chicks back to the original male should bring considerable variation to the following generation, some still strongly resembleing columbian pattern, some approaching the pencilled(partridge) pattern, and many somewhere in between. Now if there is blue at play here, especially if the female used is also blue, then you have the whole blue/black/splash thing going on too. Again I would expect some variation in the base gold/buff color as well.

Going the other way with a buff Brahma male over your blue pullet should not change anything except maybe knowing you definately then have blue in the mix.

Just curious what is the purpose of bringing in the buff, color or type ?

No particular reason. Just seems that nice partridge are hard to come by and I might need to add in a different color just to have the numbers that I'm looking for. The buff have the body type that I like, darks tend to have vulture hocks and I just don't really like the looks of the lights for some reason. The male is blue, his parents were both gold/blue partridge. He's one of the 50% that hatch black.

I'm not sure that I'm going to breed him yet....I need to look around at some other cockerels to see if I can find one that I absolutely adore. I've bred horses and dogs before, but this is my first venture with chickens. One thing I learned, if you're not sure you like the breeder (male or female, doesn't matter) then you probably shouldn't breed them. I'm just not convinced yet that he has what I'm looking for. With that said, I know that Brahmas mature slowly, so I'm going to give him some more time to grow up before I make my decision. I'm just not thrilled with his foot feathering and his body type seems a little narrow across the chest to me. The chest may widen when the hormones start popping, the foot feathering is what it is. I do love his color, his brow is really nice but I'm waiting to see about the head breadth.

At one time, I thought that difference between laced and partridge was the absence of the Columbian gene in the partridge, but both of mine show some strong Columbian characteristics. Can you clarify this for me? I assume that is why the first gen cross would bring out stronger Columbian characteristics?
