Ongoing Quilt Projects, Continued from the "No Appreciation...." Thread

I found a bright orange solid a friend sent me to do the back of a quilt and that quilt is long finished so I have a practice piece now. But, I'll do that later. Outside in the sunshine today! Snow coming Wednesday, but going to be almost 70* today. It's been an insane winter here, too much up and down.

Weather has been insane here as well. Predicted nice for my 4 days off. But only one was good for doing anything outside. Circles are really really hard as is keeping echoing even. You can also flip a patterened fabric over and practice on the side that doesn't show the pattern much and i usually use a contrasting thread on any practice.

I have 44 squares marked and pinned to stitch 88 1/2 square triangles. I need to get out my plan and see if I need to cut more background squares as I have 44 other squares left. I probably calculated wrong.

Oh gawd, that's what I have been doing. Pushing me closer to a new machine with a laser to guide those lines so I don't have to draw on 3 million freaking blocks

This is my practice for today. I morphed from the leafy meander into flowers. Much simpler for me.

LOL I love my old vintage straight stitch machines. I didn't have any idea there are machines with lasers for 1/2 squares. If I ever buy a lottery ticket and win, I would look at a new long arm first and also keep my Millie.

I've also done your flower design on many a quilt. To make it a little denser just echo the petals and throw in some swirls here and there to get from one flower to the next. ;)

I love huge rolls of butcher paper to draw on. I also use them to turn a design into a panto. I have some plexiglass scraps -- bought from a plastic place for really cheap to draw designs on to get an idea what a design will look like on a quilt or to practice on with erase board markers.

That's a great idea. I can't "imagine" things, I have to see them. Especially proportions. I would never be able to (properly) decide the scale of any design without seeing it. I think that was part of the problem with the quilt I started. I decided I didn't like what I was doing which made me even less motivated to persist with the other issues (the bulk of it, the difficulty of getting the needle through all of those layers and keeping the stitches even to my ridiculously high standard, etc).

This Angela Walters video really opens up my eyes. I'm so, what shall I call it? Maybe a little rigid? Doing an entire bed quilt this way would be very freeing, I'd think! What do you think about a quilt full of random meandering motifs like she's doing here? Of course, you'd never see a boo-boo in the middle of all that! And I see where her stitches are not perfect and she's an expert at this.

My practice for the day. Some movements are just awkward for me, but the paisley feather is getting much easier as well as the leafy meander.
Please ignore the stem on that feather--I was trying to make it pretty large and I lost control in there. I think I need to not make them super big like that and I'd do better, so feathers here and there with plain paisleys in the rest of it. Maybe the leafy meander in the top and bottom rows of the smaller stars would change it up a bit since I'm feeling a little better about that today.
