I have an EE named amber who is perfectly happy and healthy ecept for one thing, She has layed only me one egg this summer and she is only barely 3 years old! I swear she thinks she's earning her keep in snuggles

. I know after age 2 or 3 production drops drasticly but I don't think they were talking about a near complete halt of laying. Is this normal? And what can I do to motivate amber to lay me those pretty blue eggs?

Apparently, it's not all that uncommon for chickens of all breeds to take the occasional break from laying. She's probably fine & will start back up again soon. But, do make sure she's getting a good layer diet... you may have to limit treats (other than the normal bug & grass thing) for a while to make sure she's eating her maintenance chow. And, although it's a bit of an unusual time to molt, some chickens stop laying during molt. Plus... is she broody? Because, that for sure will cause her to stop laying... do you keep artificial eggs in the nest? Maybe she's trying to hatch them!

It's also been a terribly hot summer most places. Maybe that had something to do with it?? Anyway, just some ideas. Hope your girl starts laying soon, but she still needs hugs! Good luck!

I had one EE that didn't lay for two weeks and another bird about a month. They are both 6 years. The one month bird started laying thin shelled eggs and is now laying well again. This began during a dark rainy period. They are birds in my main laying flock but I don't depend on their eggs just their calming influence
