I have 3 hens and 1 rooster - I have a tractor run. I live in N. Louisiana where it is hot and very humid during the summers. I was curious, do any of you use a small fan in the coop/run area during the summer? If so, what kind of fan do you use??

You can buy small battery-powered fans at dollar stores. I sometimes hook an old car battery up to a converter and use a boxfan. If you have a tractor you could probably just move it closer to the house and plug it right in.

The key to helping chickens beat hot weather is good air circulation. Yes, fans are very useful for this. However, dust is an element of keeping chickens, so make sure the fan isn't clogged with dust and overheats and possibly causing a fire. Use with caution.

I use a rabbit hutch fan in my coop and sometimes a regular oscillating fan in the run. I may just break it out today as it's supposed to get upwards toward 100F.

We have a fan mounted high in the coop, not pointing completely at the ground but sort of mid way down. It keeps the air moving in there and so far the coop has felt comfortable anytime I've gone in it this summer.
