Hello!
So, I have had coturnix quail as pets before, sadly now they are gone and I decided to hatch some more chicks. So, I put 10 eggs in the incubator, and only one was fertilized and hatched.
I had to assist him out since he couldn't come out by himself (pipped at the wrong end, didn't barely made any progress in 25 hours after pipping + he was malpositioned in the egg.) First 2 days he did not chirp at all, but now he is chirping almost non-stop. He is now 8 days old, eating and drinking and pooping well. But, there is a lot of chirping. His brooder temperatures are fine, and I have stuffed animals and fluffy socks with him there to snuggle with. He loves when I pet him and pick him up, he falls asleep when I do.
I tried to give him a mirror as a company, but he is soo afraid of it. I tried it with a few reflecting objects, and he is terrified. I also showed him a realistic needle felted quail and he is afraid of it as well. Tried some quail chick chirping from youtube, he is scared.
My question is: will he be all right on his own? Since he is showing fear towards his own species, can I do anything else for him except plushies and snuggles?
Of course I would love to get him a friend, but right now there has been no luck finding him friends from other people and if I would find him some friends, he might be so scared that I couldn't keep him with others. And I don't have two brooders or two heat sources, so what would be the best solution for this little chick? Might his chirping eventually reduce?
Thank you!
