Only one survived

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!
Where are you located?
Rural King still has chicks if you are close to one of the stores.
I’m in AZ. Shoppers has chicks, I’m just waiting till they get the ones in that I want. The one who survived is my chocolate Orpington. I lost two lavender Orpington, her sister chocolate Orpington, a black sex link, sapphire olive egger, Isa brown, and two starlight green eggers… my Isa and sapphire use to ride around on my shoulder.

I've attached a splinting manual, which shows how to splint and wrap a wing, should help. Make sure to check often for any swelling, which can happen even after a while, you don't want anything to get too tight. Also watch for rubbing and irritation. Even if the wing doesn't heal perfect, she should be able to live a good life, since, being a chicken, they don't really have to fly. She will adapt to any imperfections with time. I hope she does well, and as your chicks grow you have a happy flock again. Depending on personality, she may enjoy being with the chicks when they are old enough to not need supplemental heat anymore. I have a couple of older hens (both blind) in a separate run that I put growing out chicks with until they are pretty close to lay, and my older hens really enjoy them and the company. Just depends on your hen. So sorry about the dog. Many have dog issues. Once you are past the worst of the shock and sorrow, it would be good to try to talk to them. Kindly explaining how traumatizing it was, and how much you cared about them, might make them a little more responsible with their dog. Many people simply just don't understand what is 'normal' behavior for a dog, they treat them and think of them like children. Which very often causes problems. They also often fail to understand that someone can bond with and love a chicken the same as they can any other animal. And sometimes, people are just jerks. The only way to be truly safe is to have an enclosure that is completely secure from roaming dogs. So sorry. :hugs

Thank you so much! I took a little bit of all the splint things I’ve been sent or seen and modified to her needs. It’s broken just at her shoulder joint. She’s lost feathers so I used gauze on tape and wrapped the wing twice before going around her body to hold it steady. She is doing better. Drinking but not eating, she is slooooowwwly trying to move around the tub but the baby aspirin diluted in water in helping so much.thank you so much❤️❤️❤️

Despite seemingly being unharmed otherwise, she is likely very, very sore. She may have been shaken or squeezed. Bruising may show up which may look dark or greenish. Try offering a little scrambled egg, or mix her feed in a bit of water to make a mash, they often like it that way. Give her some time, fingers crossed she will slowly recover.

I posted an update in the original post. I can feel where her bone is broken. She didn’t fight me in the wrap but she is only taking water from my hand. She won’t bend down to get it herself. I’m trying to clean up everything from last night…she needs a bath too.

She's probably in a lot of pain. For now, move the water up to where she can reach it without bending down. Don't worry about the bath for a while. Spot/surface clean any feathers if you must, but I'd just leave her alone as much as possible. I wouldn't bathe her if I could avoid it. Nutridrench can help if she tries to stop eating. Raw egg, yogurt, etc. can moisten feed if needed.

I would not bathe her. That will cause her more stress. If she's dirty, you can take a wet wash rag and slowly wipe it off.

Electrolytes would help her with the stress. If you have none, you can google how to make some, or here's the recipe I used, substituting honey and vinegar with the mother. She only needs a little each day for a couple of days as they shouldn't have too much of it.

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons honey OR molasses OR granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda OR 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
