Also let the kids play with the birds, and check for eggs- I'm sure they would LOVE that! (Pssst! Let them keep some of the eggs they find!

I'd take the cookies over, intro yourself & let it go at that.

I have a Gladys Kravitz neighbor and since I'm at work all day I'm glad she & DH - both retired - keep an eye on my place.
Even when it means she annoys my hayguy, who delivers when I'm not there & has to listen to her chatter (she's a talker...

) when she comes over to monitor him.

ETA: you only have to be civil to the kids, don;t have to go as far as "nice"

You did the right thing! I would've done the same thing..

A neighbor once had me watching his house well they were away.. I look out the window and see a porcha in their drive..

I go over to right down, plate num# Neighbor comes out've house and was like hey, watcha doing.. Oh just in case the driver of this really expensive car was breaking into your house getting the plates.. He thought that was pretty funny and thanked me!

You did the right thing, I'm sure they will understand

Playing Gladys Kravitz would be fun if I lived somewhere else. Nothing ever happens here. We have a grand total of 5 cars that drive down our street. We have only had one crime and that was when a teenager broke into my car. He didn't take anything but did leave his cell phone in the driver's seat. The police came, called his mother, and followed her directions to his location.

Back to the cookie flavor: I once took a recipe for oatmeal cookies with raisins and added chocolate chips to it. The best of all possible worlds.. fiber AND chocolate!
