Whatever happened with getting Opal as a recognized color? I can’t seem to find any newer or relevant information regarding this color. Was the test breeding done on it ever figured out? Any info would be great.

Opal looks like blue lavender to me. I don’t know what’s happened in regards to getting it recognized. If it is blue lavender, it won’t breed true (just like blue).

Edit: never mind, though you probably could get a similar looking bird by breeding blue lavenders.

Opal as a OEGB color was a project from a single breeder, two at most. We have not received any updates for many years now. There is a very good chance that the mutation has been lost.

Test breeding was done and at the time we came to the conclusion that it was one of the many allelic mutations of the recessive white allele, we tentatively gave the nomeclature as c^op when crossed to recessive white the offspring were c^op/c and appeared mostly Opal or intermediate. When cross to C+ the C+/c^op were normal colored

I cannot speak to the genetics behind it, thankfully Nicalandia was able to fill in those blanks. To add to the above, regarding Opal being recognized, it's listed in my 2020 ABA standard under the varieties for OEGBs so it must have been. It's not listed in the inactive varieties, either, though I can't find any information on what span of time without any birds of a variety being shown determines when that variety becomes inactive. I certainly hope, given that, that the variety has not been fully lost.

Can you show me a picture of the text in the APA that says Opal is a recognized color for OEGB please
