Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Ooh PK! Don't trade with him, trade with me! Me!

PK I will take that trade in a heartbeat! The only good thing about the winter cold, is it keeps the nasty bugs and other creepy crawlies from having a population explosion! It is bad enough we have cold, but when we change the clocks tonight it will start getting dark soooo early! I still will be getting up in the dark, but now the day will last less for me!

Who do I give the weather to, then?

Yes, I love it when all the bugs don't bother us anymore because of the cold.

Good day all,

PK, I think most of us would gladly take it now! Except Loco, he's still basking in sunshine!

All that talk of cold weather did it. We are currently sitting just above 32F. NOT my idea of fun, anymore than 95F is! We did build a fire last night, I do enjoy it, despite my worries about the ancient brick chimney. At least it's sunny and not windy today!

Chickens and ducks seem to be taking it in stride. The chickens staged a prison break yesterday and as a result spent the whole day free ranging.

I was baking cookies with one eye on them all day since there was a big dog running loose the day before. The sherriff's dept. had to shoot the poor thing after it threatened several people and attacked the deputies! Dang irresponsible owners....... but that another thread.....

We live in a rural type area, but after looking at the county property plats yesterday I was astounded by how many neighbors we actually have. And how close they are! Our property is heavily wooded all around so we don't really see/hear anything but traffic on the 2 lane highway. But just on either side of us and across the highway there are a jillion small properties, houses close together.
What happened is what's often called "heir's property".
Someone several generations back bought 50 acres and farmed it. When they died, the children split it up with some land for each, none were interested in continuing to farm. Each child built a house or had a mobile home brought in, on their section. Then when they died, their kids split that area up and added even more houses. This goes on and on, until the original 50 acres is finally 200 quarter acre lots, crowded with mobile homes and small houses. It's a shame, in my opinion, for a nice chunk of former farmland to be turned into such a mish mash on tiny properties.

Sam, did you get snow yet?

MamaG, I agree - the worst part of going back to real time is the early darkness!

Tomorrow was supposed to be hatch day for me, but I woke up this morning just in time to see #1 emerge. #2 arrived this afternoon and #3 is zipping right now. One more has pipped and the last 2 eggs haven't shown any signs but there is still plenty of time. I will post pics when they are all nice and fluffy in the brooder. I moved the Orp chicks into their new coop this morning to free up the brooder for these guys. They were a little confused at first but were soon loving the extra room.

Friday was "Bonfire Night" or "Guy Fawkes Night" for us here. Most towns put on a fireworks display. Our nearest town had theirs last night so we took the kids. It was absolutely superb, a wonderfully choreographed display. Even the fact that Health and Safety meant we were at least 100ft away from the bonfire and couldn't feel any warmth didn't detract from the night.

Hope everyone is well, for those in a cold climate, stay warm. For the rest of you.......

Had plans to work around here today but before I could get started a customer called with an emergency. They had water running everywhere. I explained how to shut off the water and then went to check out the problem. It turned out to be that twenty years ago when a plumber installed the dishwasher he used a plastic line and used a metal compression ring rather the a plastic one. It finally cut thru the plastic and allowed the water line to come loose. I got the problem repaired and helped clean up the mess. I now have fans set up along with a dehumidifer to try get rid of the moisture.

We've had to scrape the frost from out windshield most mornings and it did spit a little snow. They got almost two inches about 80 miles east of me along Lake Huron. Now they are talking temperatures in the low 60s for this coming week.

3 duckies are in the brooder this morning and one more egg is pipping. I don't think the remaining 2 are showing any signs of life but you never know. I would be thrilled with 4 anyway.

The weather is set to turn very nasty here this week. Gales and snowstorms. I think I might crawl into a hole and emerge next spring.

Thistle my bonnie girl, chickens and rheas weren't enough; now it's ducks? They are cute though, messy but cute.

Since I have the weather for all my bairns on my home page I'm aware that you are going to have a week of temperatures not much above freezing. Stay warm.

Funnily enought the ducks were DH's idea, he brought me home the eggs.

He is quite taken with them, I think his nose has been pressed to the bator almost as much as mine.

There is no such thing as "enough". I have my eye on my neighbours' Sebbies next.

Did you ever get that snow?
