Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Highlander: Well, I am so anxious to see what Opa can do with them! My brother painted on them(gorgeous) and I have seen some really pretty center pieces made with the emu eggs and feathers. I can not bring myself to raise ratites, they can be pretty aggressive and are LARGE! Wish I could get ahold of some ostrich eggs-now those are HUGE. Opa could do a ship in a bottle type affair with one of those(using a real ship!

Sally: Why haven't we seen pictures of the itty bitty ducks?

Another glorious day and things ar starting to wind down. I didn't get much accomplished as Granny had some dear friends from Kentucky come for a visit. When I found out that they would be here I hurriedly rushed out and got a variety of lunch meats, cheeses and breads to fix them lunch. While Granny visited with her friend I sat and talked with the husband. Sure was an enjoyable afternoon and Granny was delighted.
All the work I had intended to do is still waiting and it don't matter there is always tomorrow. No on second thought since tomorrow I will be visiting with the YakLady I will have to wait a day before saying I'll do it tomorrow.
The emu eggs look incredible and I hope my ability to carve something on them matches the kindness with which they were offered.

My oldest son called a little while ago. He is currently is in Great Falls Montana and killing time till his next sales call. He had gone through a museum and called to say the he wished I were with him. I sure love the relationship I have with my sons.
On occasion I hear the old Harry Chapin song "Cat's in the cradle" and it reminds me that the time I invested in my sons was time well spent.

I THINK I posted last Monday?

Uh, Sally, those sure were cute ducks you posted a pic of the other day.

I even commented on how cute they were. Just for me falsely accusing you of not sharing your ducks with us, you can give me one of these...

Opa sounds like you and Granny had a wonderful day. What a lovely sentiment you posted regarding your sons.
Maggie you are WAY braver than me eating rattlesnake-

. I don't care if it DOES taste like chicken.

Sheila, you might be surprised what you would eat if it was between you and starvation. We lived very primitively.
I had told the story before how I had just come back home from the hospital after having a Caesarian with my youngest child and having to go under the house and kill rattlesnakes.

My two oldest kids remember that very well.
I hate to admit it but we also raided the downfall in the neighbors orchard. Ornery old cuss would have rather let it rot on the ground than let it go anywhere else. So, I am NOT perfect by any means.
There were also a lot of rabbits. Myself, oldest son and oldest daughter got good with a gun.
We were way out in the middle of nowhere, man gone all the time. He generally came home long enough to pay bills and leave. Pay bills is a loose term. I remember having $10 to spend one week on groceries. After that, rattlesnake looks pretty darn good.

I hauled water for laundry, dishes, baths etc and heated it up on the stove. The shack was such there was only one room we could heat well in the winter.
Though growing up kind of prepared me for it. We grew most things to eat ourselves, heated with wood etc.(a lot of days when we didnt have school was spent out getting wood for the coming winter, even if it was spring, lol). I know we were poor but I never felt that way. Our needs were always met. My kids have said much the same.
LOL, I laugh now when my youngest thinks she has it bad if her cell phone battery dies and cant be replaced for a day or so.
Oops. Memories make me ramble on.
