Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Had butterdips last night with venison lasagna. Hope used some Italian sausage that I had made and it sure made for a good meal. Tonight we're have pulled pork sandwich, souther style with cold slaw on them, and french fries. I real good way to use up the left over pork roast from Thursday. We were stuck eating venison tenderloins on Friday.

Wednesday Granny is going to one of my brothers house for 10 days and they don't eat any wild meat. The poor girl will probably waste away to nothing while she's there.

Last week Granny and I made anise flavored pizzelles which are addicting, but David's wife Amy doesn't like the anise flavor. So to try to find something she does like Hope and I made peppermint flavored on yesterday. Since I've never made any using peppermint oil before we only made a single batch. Boy was that a mistake. I might even like them better than the anise flavored ones. Going to make another batch using lemon extract and see how those turn out.

Ranchie, I don't envy you with the terrible weather you are having. Homes in the south aren't designed to stay warm and then there is the problem southerns have with know how to keep their parts from freezing. I have 65 years of experience with cold weather and know just what is the necessary clothing one must have to keep their parts from freezing off.

opa you need too tell this oma what clothes too wear too stay warm in. I freeze in this house every winter unless the heat pump is turned up way too high too breathe. I hate being so cold all the time. I have never heard of making pizzelles. Might I ask what they are? I like deer meat and kept a lot when I was able too hunt and then different ones would bring me one a year but the last couple of years I have not received any deer meat at all. Of course the DH won't eat it but I love it. And I am an oma for real. Most all my GChildren call me oma.

Just came in from taking the trash dumpster out to the shoulder of the road. Usually I take it out the night before, but with the heavy snowfall and 50 mph winds last night I thought it would be wise to wait til morning. It's75 feet out to the road and dragging the dumpster through the snow turned out to be quite an endeavor. The snow is about 8" deep and in several places it has drifted to 18". The temperatures is 14 and still falling and as soon as it's light I'll go out and start digging out.

Mema, a pizzelle is very thin waffle like cookies. Our pizzelle iron makes two four inch cookies at a time and it takes just under two minutes for them to bake. When you think about a double batch being 8 cups of flour, 3 cups of sugar, 12 eggs, 2 cups of oil and assorted dry ingredients you have a large bowl of batter. As you bake then each waffle take less than a walnut sized dollop of batter. So making them takes awhile.

Good day all,

Well, it is officially bitter cold and windy, I think I woke up in Scotland today. Brrrrrrrr! It's supposed to get up to about 38F today, and the "breeze" is slicing through everything. I'm trying to see how many layers of long underwear I can put on and still get my jeans on over them!

Poor DH was up at 4 a.m. for a drive to another town for work, so I got up too, out of sympathy. And because the dogs got excited and wouldn't leave me alone. It's so cold that I may even make some coffee, not a usual thing here. And definitely a big pot of corn soup, need it to warm up a bit. The chickens will be getting oatmeal again today. Yesterday they got scrambled eggs and oatmeal, it was quite a sight.

Hi mema, best bet is to dress in many, many layers. I treasure my long underwear for that very reason. I get cold easily and find I have to get up and move around a lot or I freeze. I have a down vest that I wear a lot, both inside and outside. It really helps keep my "core" warm yet my arms are free to move.

Opa, you aren't kidding about the southern houses being constructed to get rid of heat rather than conserve it. This house is insulated pretty well, but being 110+ years old isn't helping any. Add in the fact that it doesn't get much sun until afternoon.... well, it's old and cold! Like me!

Good Morning Opa and Ranchie, The coffee tastes great this moring. We have 2 F this morning with a high of 10 F forecast............ugghhh! Nothing above freezing in the 10 day forecast either...............Chickens and ducks will be locked up again today with lights on and heated water, not their favorite but that's the way it is......

Our son's Day Training/Workshop Program, in the town 19 miles away, was cancelled for today. They don't risk transporting disabled clients in weather like this. He will be coming to work with me (half day in the office for me today so not a problem having him there)...Thank you Lord for compassionate co-workers (and a small office that doesn't have a "big boss").

Opa, The pizzelles sound great in the peppermint flavor. I love anise, but the hubby doesn't, he doesnt't like peppermint either, but the lemon would be right up his alley. Great news on your "yard ornament" buck!

Ranchie, Do whatever you have to to stay warm! I took this picture yesterday after reading your post, but couldn't get it to upload......the wireless connection we have jumps back and forth when usage is high or weather is too stormy. Yesterday, I gave up on it early, everyone must of been at home and on the computer here in the mid-west. Early a.m. today it works like a charm.

Safe travels to Granny and Ranchie's DH..........everyone have a warm, safe day!

View out my north facing window that has our computer next to it..........I usually have the blinds up and love looking our the window but closed them.....it made me cold just seeing the blowing! The shortest day of the year is next week and then the days start to get longer....

Later, Mary

Just came in from moving the snow around. It took me a little over two hours with the snow blower. The sun is now out, and when looking out the windows it's quite beautiful. Sort of reminds me of my second wife. Very pretty to look at but too cold to live with.

Woke this morning around 4 with every intention of going hunting. Coffee ready to turn on, clothes laid out, gun sitting by the back door. Then I looked at the single digit temperature with the sub zero wind chills, started thinking about the snow drifts I'll need to get through enroute to my hunting blind, thought about how difficult it will be to field dress a deer in artic conditions, and finally thought about how warm and comfortable I currently am, and alas, I wimped out. Here I sit drinking coffee, posting on BYC and seriously considering going back to bed.

We had freezing rain this morning, on top of the snow that has been piling up since November.....looks like I need to find my ice skates to get to work!

Ranchie....I hope you are staying warm....SC is not use to the freezing temps, but I will take your 38F and consider it a heat wave!
