Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Finished butchering the last deer today. It sure was a strange hunting season. Only killed 5 deer this year and since Bob didn't get anything I gave one big doe to him. Only made one batch of sausage and pastrami so it really emphasises how poor the season was, although in all honesty part of the reduced take was due to not hunting as much as I usually do. Next month I'm going to meet my son Joe half way and get a side of beef and half a hog. I'll probably make sausage with that so we still will eat pretty good.

I'm not real impressed with my chickens. I only got 3554 eggs last year and it should have been double that. Now they decided they don't want to lay at all. I got 2 eggs on January 1st and haven't had one since. When I think about the $75 I spent Sunday for feed it seems pretty stupid to even mess with them.

Opa, Have you got lights on in the coop? Are you feeding laying mash?

Sam, mine went, and are still going through, the worst molt ever. It's been about 3 months since I saw a steady supply of eggs. Right now I get 1 or 2 per week. Mine range in age from 9 months to just over 5 years. Good thing the ducks started laying or I'd be buying eggs again!

Rooster Wrangler is baaaaaack! Of the 9 bantam Cochins at least 6 are roosters.

They're still inside, so every morning I awake to several practicing to be ancient door hinges.

I haven't been getting very many eggs myself, but then again I don't put lights in my coop. Out of 12 chickens I am only getting one or two eggs a day. In the summer I usually get 10 a day. I think only a few of my chickens are even laying right now, the rest are on strike.
I have actually been buying eggs from the supermarket and that hurts!

Sam, I wouldn't know what to do with 3554 eggs. My seven old biddies give me about two eggs a day, which is perfect for me. When they occasionally gift me with more, I share them with my neighbor across the street. Even when they are molting, I usually get two eggs a day. Of course, with only eight chickens, my feed cost is somewhat lower than yours. And the rooster is really superflourous, but he does a good job of herding the hens...

Harlan, I agree that the "Rooster Rangler" needs her title updated....
