Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

It is wonderful to see the graves of veterans honored. There are alot of small cemeteries around here that the graves of veterans never were attended. David and one of his friends have taken it upon them selves to see that flags are placed just before Memorial Day and removed before Labor Day. I think they are attending to at least 30 cemeteries and several thousand graves.

Agreed! What a wonderful thing for David and his friend to be doing. Seeing the flags on graves always requires a moment of thoughtful reflection about the cost of our freedoms and how easily they could be lost.

Took momma to the elder daycare today and we ran away fishing; so relaxing to be able to go and not worry if she was alright. It was the best day we have had in a long time, very relaxing. The river is still up a bit but the fishing was great; had a thief try and take fish off my stringer though....a cottonmouth of all things!! Scared the bejeebers out of me when I pulled up the stringer to see why the fish were thrashing about and a 3' snake was attached to one of them!!! After he left we put the fish in 5 gallon buckets of water in the boat. We have decided we need to spend a day like this more often; without all the worry about being gone. Surprisingly momma did pretty well and seemed to enjoy parts of being there. I think the fellowship of others will do her some good.

Tomorrow will be more work in the garden, have more sweet potato slips ready to go out and the row of cabbage needs worked out. Finally broke down and purchased a 3 gallon crock, sauerkraut board and cover to I can make some good tasting kraut this year. Made a small amount last year in the jars and it just didn't taste "krauty" enough for us.

Hope that everyone has had a good day and evening!
Blessings, Shirley

Good evening! Glad to hear from you, CCMH, and good to know that you're safe! Sounds like you had a wonderful day. How does one make sauerkraut, anyway?

Opa, what a wonderful thing for your sons to do!

Today was uneventful as always. Cleaned my room, played video games, tolerated my brothers.

Just counted 9 female rufus hummers at the feeders refueling for the night. Do hope they have been able to keep their nest warm and dry enough with all the cold rain. Took care of some friends' animals over the weekend. Got a gallon of milk from their goat and made vinegar cheese, Yumm! Also got to see one of their hens crow, not nearly as loud as a rooster but she was certainly crowing!

Crazychickenmamahen, The homemade sauerkraut sounds wonderful!

Opa, Yes, what a wonderful thing David and his friend are doing. It is a very thoughtful remembrance.

For some reason I have never been able to attract humming birds to feeders. David has them at his house but not here. I have friends that have all kinds of humming birds and they have no more flowers than I around their homes. For many years my folks lived in sw Kentucky and Dad kept lots of bird feeders filled. Several humming bird feeders were placed so he could watch them from the screened in porch. Several times I would be sitting on the porch with Dad and heard a loud buzzing sound. Two or three hummers would be hovering right at the door. My Dad remarked that the feeders must be empty, that the birds always did that to let him know they needed more nectar.

Good Morning Everyone!

Opa, Great job on the incubator! I have an old cabinet Farm Master and the window in the door is so small not much can be seen through it. David is doing a great and honorable thing, I know you are proud of him.

Ec, Learning to tolerate others is a great character trait...one that very few learn...glad your brothers are helping you learn it young! I hope you are having a bit of fun before studies start again.

CCMH, Aggghhh!......cottonmouth! Glad you didn't lose any fish to it and that you had a nice day relaxing and doing something you enjoy.

Welcome to all those new to this thread.....Opa has the best cuppa coffee around!!

Freedom Rangers are going for processing this morning. Once that coop is cleaned and electro-net moved to fresh ground, the juvie Icelandics will move into it until I decide who stays and who goes. Lots to do so off to get started. Have a great day everyone!

Another beautiful day is underway. The sun is up, everything is green, the lawn is newly mown, and everything looks right in the world. I've drunk a pot of coffee, checked my emails, worked the crossword puzzle and am now ready to start the day. Granny just got up and the first thing she does is put the flag out in the holder on the front porch. I got her coffee sitting at her place at the table and David just came in carrying a large batch of asparagus that he picked this morning. The day is off to a wonderful start.

CCMH, cottonmouths are definitely one downside to fishing in southern Missouri. I had several run ins with them when fishing the Big Piney near Leonard Wood. I would imagine that give the storms lately that the Current River is running pretty fast.

NAF, so the Freedom Rangers are losing their freedom.

Afternoon all....

MamaG have you ever planted broccoli in the fall? We do and it works pretty well, less buggy too!

PK/Ec Sauerkraut is not hard to make, just requires shredding of cabbage that is mixed with a ratio of salt and packed and pressed down into a crock so that a brine is formed. You keep it weighted down under the brine for about 6 weeks and skim the scummy stuff that forms on the top every day...it ferments and when its done you have delicious kraut! Then we can it.

peepacheep the vinegar cheese sounds yummy; I keep wanting to try it and haven't yet....guess I need to do that!

Hi NAF!! Interested to hear about how the Freedom Rangers dress out, where did you get your chicks?

Opa, yes the Current has a couple extra feet in it right now and a little dingy for it, but still lovely and it was great to be able to travel all the way to Blue Spring because there was so much water....no shallow spots yesterday!!

So excited today; my cousin's first fabric line has just been released by Timeless Treasures for sale. It is called "Flutter" and I am so proud and happy for her and can't wait to get my hands on some to add to my incredible mountains of fabric

I don't know why but I can't abide the taste of goat's milk. Every time I've tried to drink it the smell has repulsed me. Even goat's milk cheese in unpalatable for me. I immediately detect an odor reminiscent of the rankest billy goat's beard. Scott, my youngest son, is something of an expert of all things pertaining to food and drink and he claims that this is a phenomena that affects only a small number of people.

Speaking of eating, tonight's supper was especially good. I smoked a slab of spareribs, Hope prepared potato salad, a this morning I picked close to two pounds of wild asparagus. Couldn't help but wonder what the poor people were eating.

Opa, I'm with you on the goat's milk. I can't stand the smell of it or any part of goat. Now, my brother raised goats, sold milk and drank it and loved it. He even eats goat.
