Open coop

You are right to keep it open. Here in North Florida it is so hot and humid. I have hardware cloth on all 4 sides and the top and then I have it all covered with tin. I am on my second year and it is really nice. Mine have been handling the heat really well. I use sand in the pen and it is great. In the coldest part of winter I put plastic up and they were comfy.

Well done! My coop is open too and I love it. Our winters are mild (rarely below 32 degrees) but the summers are oppressively hot. For most of the year they roost in the area that is completely open and air can circulate from nearly all directions. In the worst part of winter (Dec.-Feb.) I staple plastic up over the wire around the roosting area to keep the wind out and the birds generally roost in the enclosed 3-sided part of the coop.
