I am going to show a Mottled Cochin hen next year and have no clue what to do. What is the difference between 4H and Open show? Do you have to take the bird out of the cage?

Thanks!:celebrate

Well I do know that 4 H is for kids, the maximum age is 18. But kids can show in open as well.
Good luck....post some pics!

At any show the only ones that should remove a bird or even touch a bird is the owner or judge. Birds stay in the coop for the show, except for judging. Then it is ONLY the judge that takes the bird out and looks it over. If a bird is a class champion and if the show has a champion row, the owner will move the bird to champion row to once again be judged against the other class champions.

To show in 4H, the owner must be a registered youth member of 4H. Open shows are just what their name states - open to all chicken owners regardless of age. If an event is offered to both Open and 4H registrants, then a 4H member can (and usually does) cross enter in the "Open" portion of a show. An Open shower cannot, however cross enter in the 4H portion unless he or she is a registered 4H youth member.
