I confess I have recently committed treason against BYC by doing research at another site. In this blog post https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/chicken-water-nipples/ the author mentions screw in horizontal nipples that can be opened for cleaning. After a small bit of looking I can not find this product anywhere, and wonder if anyone has experience with them and would recommend them?

I'm a newbie but have both types. In my experience the only cleanable nippler is a 90 degree style and not spring assist closing. The spring assist closing(usually red)are not cleanable to my knowledge. The "red" kind are relatively inexpensive and a consumable product meaning take out the bad ones and toss it and install new. If they are plugging up excessively maybe you can filter the water before filling the watering system.

I purchased mine from Amazon. The red Square ones have a spring inside that keeps them from leaking and are great for horizontal use and are not cleanable or repairable. The vertical type work best screwed in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. The nippler tip hangs down and as the birds peck at it liquid will run out into their mouth BUT only water pressure/gravity closes them. I have soaked the brooder coop beading twice with the vertical kind and now only use the horizontals in any place that needs to stay dry. I will try to post a link for both kinds if I can figure it out ...I'm not to tech savvy lol

You can take the nipple out and clean around the O ring that seals the water from coming out, I've done it! You could also replace the O ring if you find the right size. I haven't had to do that in three years though. I don't know where you saw that you can't clean or repair them, but you can. There's a spring inside also, if you really wanted to replace it, if needed.

Here's a link, you can see how horizontals are put together.

Yes I recommend them, that's all I use.
If you need a heated waterer, here's my link.

I stand corrected....I have never had to take the horizontal nippler apart because they haven't failed in 2 plus years. I couldn't imagine trying to find an "O" ring that small or a compression spring of the correct diameter and tension in the event I dropped either piece. All that being said I personally prefer to use the horizontal nippler for most applications...however the littlest chicks prefer the vertical nipples I have in a 5 gallon bucket but they are slowly moving to the horizontal ones as they get bigger.
