Opinions of cold climate chicken keepers needed

Soft shells from cold weather. Maybe I should tell my birds that. Their egg shells are hard as rocks. And opinion are, every ones got one.

Considering I asked for opinions, I'm glad so many people do have them, you included! I was truly concerned about my chickens and didn't know what to do.

I value everyone's advice here and I carefully consider them all.

Your reply was really good, really nice. Better than mine would’ve been cuz not not deserved. More respect to you!

As I said to another poster on another thread. I can only type. I can't make you change your mind. I hope you don't lose power over night. I will say this I haven't seen a chicken house that was NOT heated burn down. Now it might have been close to a house that burnt down. I'll also say and not directed to you in any way. Why would people stack newspapers right beside a wood stove. Beats me. Good luck. It's been much colder here in Maine pretty much since NOV and I have no heat in my coop nor do I have it insulated. AND it's one of those rickety pre fabs. BOOOO HISSS. Saves people time. LOL My chickens are awake, lively, squawking, maybe laid an egg over night and ready for breakfast at 0730. I'm of the ilk if it ain't broke I'm not gonna fix it. I do what I think is best for my birds and I would hope that you do to.

You're entirely right about only being able to type and not always change someone's mind! That's the hardest thing about giving advice. You know in your heart that it's good advice, but the other person has to make the final decision. Sometimes they take the advice and sometimes they don't. You just have to shrug your shoulders, say Oh well, and go on with life. But never stop helping people and giving advice. That's what we all come here for. And this also is not directed at you only. I've seen people get quite annoyed to angry here when they don't agree with what others say. A kind word goes a long way when someone is truly factually wrong. And I've seen those too, lol.
I'm not too concerned about power outage because the plate I bought doesn't really heat the whole coop, just provides a warm area if they need it, kinda like an upright MHP. From what I've read, the coop temp as a whole goes up only a few degrees. I'm willing to bet they'll still sleep on the roost and not huddle in front of it. There's never been a day yet that I haven't seen them sitting on the outside roost and scratching around on the ground. It's possible I'm doing this more for my peace of mind, lol. I'm pretty confident of the winter viability of chickens. I have a picture of my Mom up in the UP of Michigan holding her 7 pet bantams. I'm sure there was no heat for them in the 1920s.

I'm rarely angry. Frustrated maybe. I was angry in my younger years and I hated having a sore throat all the time. Yelling does that. I also believe I would be remiss in not helping people. I have dealt with people all my life you don't "listen". I am an RN. Worked in Hemodialysis. Many times I would ask people if they liked the beds in the hospital, the food, etc. They pretty much said no. And then I asked them why they were trying to get into the hospital by drinking too much, eating poorly etc. Some it clicked some it didn't. But it was my duty to educate them. Sometimes blunt shocks them into realizing what they are doing sometimes it doesn't. I was raised by my dad. My mother was sickly and passed when I was three. So I'm sure that's where I get my no no nonsense approach. Does it always work NOPE would the alternative work better IDK. Thanks for your reply.

Oh my gosh yes, I'm an RN too and the stories I could tell! Without any patient identifying information of course, lol.

Also if you use electricity what happens when you lose power. Then your birds will get a shock. At the cold temps that they haven't gotten used to.

You made some really good points. Very informative. This one, though I have heard before and take issue with it. When extreme temperatures are infrequent and heating is only used for those few times, this really doesn't matter.
