If you want both rain protection and light, you could use clear polycarbonate roofing panels - like these:

That's what I'm planning on using for my run. I've seen lots of people use them and like them.

I am doing the same! The best of both worlds.

That's a good idea too. I had considered metal on the back 1/4 and clear on the rest.

We used metal. No regrets!!! Definitely cover it. Mine get plenty of light.
