Here, I could come to you with the bill, the sheriff, and the dogs carcass, and the law would be on my side. You seem to acknowledge that a dog is not as valuable as a person, in that a dog attacking people must be stopped. Dogs are property. So are chickens. If your dog is killing someone else's livestock why do you expect them not to shoot it?

If the dog was chasing cattle instead, and somebody's $20,000 bull stepped in a hole and broke its leg and had to be put down, would you still rather have the bill? How would anyone get that kind of money out of you?

Sorry Red, I have to agree. You can sink a lot of money into a cow, only to have someone's "Pet" destroy that. It isn't just a money issue. One cow, one chicken, one duck could set your breeding project back a year or more. It's unacceptable.

LOL, you don't have to agree with me. Noone does.
Its just my own personal opinion..

Iagree that dogs HAVE to stay on your property, and I hate the jack wagon's that LET their dogs roam...
But accidents happens, and smart dogs escape....good dogs that are NEVER otherwise let loose...
Blame the owner, and YES, take them to court for your zillion dollar cow.... dont kill a innocent animal..
Again, unless it is attacking..

Then you're stuck in court, have court fees on top of the loss of the animal...your breeding program is possibly damaged...or maybe you just lost a dear pet...

Will you link me the fb page supporting her? I won't flame them, I am genuinely curious as to what these people are suggesting. I want to make sense of this.

Wow, I went to the gym and the thread grew!

Confession time... I am the one who posted the link to BYC under the name Judy Gex. The other posts I made in the comments thread have been pretty much the consensus here. I just didn't out myself when I posted this on BYC because I wanted to hear what others had to say without doing that.

I just read what she posted on the Bula's Law page about deleting posts.

I almost thought that after the comments on the news story showed a vast majority of opposition to her plight, that she might get a clue and understand that when a dog is in your coop killing chickens there isn't really a way to determine if he's somebody's beloved pet, a stray or a dumped and hungry dog. Even if the dog has a collar, there really isn't a way to know for sure. And as others have stated, I'm not going to try to grab adog in a killing frenzy that's the size of a miniature darned pony.

All of my last dogs died of OLD AGE. Why? Because I made darned sure they stayed out of harm's way by keeping them kenneled or otherwise kept from leaving our property. We travel a lot and when we do, the dogs go to the vet to be kenneled until we return. It can be expensive, but we don't have to worry about them while we're gone and they are alive and well when we get back.

Several years ago I owned a horse farm. At the time we were raising Arabains. One day I looked out the window and saw two large black dogs chasing my brood mares. I grabbed my gun and fourwheeler and went out into the pasture. I initially tried to scare the dogs away but as I chased one the other would circle around and continue to chase the horses. After several minutes of this I shot both dogs. These were both well fed and had collars so I knew they were from nearby but I didn't feel I had time to search for the owners. I disposed of the dogs and nobody ever came asking after them. Initially I felt guilt and remorse but I then checked the mares and colts and one nice mare had a deep cut over her right front knee ( looked as though she had ran into a fence). The cut severed her tendons. Despite good vet care she always had a limp and drug that foot. Although she could still be bred this did destroy her value and her use for anything else. After that I never bothered to try to scare a dog away, I just shot them.

Kristy, I am the same peaceful, non-violent lib.... if there were any other alternative to shooting the dog, I'd attempt it. If the dog was just in the yard and not killing any of my animals, I'd not shoot it, but would try to find out where it lived to give the owner a warning. And ONE warning would be all they would get.

All bets are off if one of my babies is dead.

Right, I respect that.... you would try other methods first before just shooting someones lost pet.

IF there wasn't blood being shed. Then it'd likely be SSS. I've read too many accounts in this forum alone about chicken or livestock owners letting the dog owner know what had been done and then the retribution that followed. I used to think honesty was the best policy, but I think I'm leaning more towards the "what they don't know" policy.
