My little buff started laying with the big barred rock at 21 weeks, an egg a day and she has not missed for three weeks.
big buff started laying last week, 24 weeks. I have a light in their coop /run from 730 am to 830 am and from 5 pm until 830 pm.
little buff taught all the others where to lay their eggs, in the basket! she hates to be handled, does not come when I call, acts like I am going to put her in the roaster any minute, but she sure can lay eggs!

They are beautifu! I am definately planning on adding two or three Buffs to my flock in the spring!!

My RIR's are only about 4 months old and when they are out together under supervision only!! - they get still when they are afraid, look around for me and if they are really afraid, they run my way like a stampede! They are babies and I guess I must be momma hen! My Dominiques are getting so big that they are not as timid but they all do seem to group together when they are alerted to danger.
Guess that's how the term "chicken" started to be used to mean coward!

I got the girls at Meyer Hatchery, though afterwards I found out the local fair does sell pullets and hens also. So if I ever add more girls I would look there.

My cover girl (Millie, though maybe I'll change it to Cindy) is always the first to come running to me! )

Very nice looking birds
I think you will get eggs..
As for the lights. I do turn one on in each of the coops every night between 4-7 just for an hour or so so they have one more chance to eat and drink befor bed time..
I usually go out just befor I start cooking supper then after we eat I go out and turn them off. Just one regular light bulb.
It gets SO DARK now.
and I want to make sure they have food to burn to keep them warm in the winter weather.
