Opossum attack

Had an Appaloosa gelding that would start to limp as soon as I put my saddle on him. The first few times he got away with it, then I realized he was running a scam....
You never rehome a Opossum! It will come back, cause a problem to someone else or get injured/killed by the Opossum whose territory you are putting your interloper in. It's better to dispatch the Opossum if you catch it. The welcome mat was put out when the Cat food was made available....

The cat food is in the cat room , screened porch off the garage where our cats stay. Can’t do much about that. Have chased a couple Opossums out over the past few years, though this was the first to go after the hens .
The cats might have invited the Opossum with the offer of chicken so they don’t have to share food anymore.
Opossum gets chicken, Human gets rid of Opossum, Cats keep their food.
From what I’ve been reading it looks like the best option, if it comes back, is to dispatch the Opossum, although I would rather not have to.

My daughter in law was a cat rescuer and let her cats roam free 40 yrs. When she passed I took on the task of building catios for them all so coyotes won't eat anymore. Your chickens aren't the only thing that will get eaten here
We haven’t had any coyote since we got donkeys (knock on wood) and the donks even stomped a bobcat, though not until after it killed a turkey.
The only concern we have for the cats has been snake bites. Lost 2 cats to snakes.

We have 31 Mammoth Jackstock Donkeys, they're all pasture pets. When our barn cats are in the pastures mousing they always head for the nearest exit as soon as they seen the donkeys coming.

Our donks don’t mess with the cats, they have curb stomp a turkey, and tried to get our dog. The dog thought it was a game of chase and slowed down so the donkeys got closer to him then took off again.

We were awakened late last night by a ruckus in the garage.
We have a couple of hens that found out about the wonders of cat food so we can’t get them to leave the garage area.
Anyway, we go out and find an opossum chewing on feathers where or bantam hen usually roosts. We were in a panic and feeling devistated. Chased the opossum out of the garage and start looking for the body. Don’t find anything but feathers, no blood, no body. After 10 mins of searching we find her in the cat room. We cuddle her and get her settled back down.
Today, she is playing up the victim. Following my wife around and clucking woundedly every time she turns around. After the third time of cuddling and treats my wife catches her NOT limping.

No, that doesn’t mean she won’t still get coddled for fer close call.
The problem is the other hen that stays in the garage , who we found outside by the chicken gate after the attack, is claiming that she deserves an award for running out and screaming while little one was getting attacked. She is waiting for her interview with the Clucker’s Gazette to explain how her running by to get out the door gave Ebby time to get away.
We have had a lot of that awhile back. We put out live trap (dry cat food works great) usually caught by next morning or next day. Relocate several miles away next to a pond so they have a good food supply.

Before I patched the hole in the wire of our catio out back we had possums everywhere .I didn't have to relocate any of them. I just removed their access to the catio where they were eating cat food. They left on their own.
