My grand paw rehabilitated possums too. He would put them in an empty 55 gallon drum, or else in a small cage about the size of your's and then he fed them on leftover bread, milk, and table scraps for a couple of weeks. Gramps said that he was "cleaning the possum out." I always thought that he was fattening them up for the slaughter. Anyway grand mother baked the cleaned out possums on a bed of sweet taters and she made a pone of corn bread to sop up the possum grease. I use to like baked possum until i was about 12 when one night my coon dog "treed" one inside the body cavity of a dead cow. That ended my possum eating.
Even in captivity a possum's life expectancy is brief so they don't make good pets like dogs or cats. Possums however are the smartest marsupial in North America. However about the only trick that I was ever able to teach a possum was to roll over and play dead. They can perform that trick very well thank you.
