Opossum dying in my horse corral

My grand paw rehabilitated possums too. He would put them in an empty 55 gallon drum, or else in a small cage about the size of your's and then he fed them on leftover bread, milk, and table scraps for a couple of weeks. Gramps said that he was "cleaning the possum out." I always thought that he was fattening them up for the slaughter. Anyway grand mother baked the cleaned out possums on a bed of sweet taters and she made a pone of corn bread to sop up the possum grease. I use to like baked possum until i was about 12 when one night my coon dog "treed" one inside the body cavity of a dead cow. That ended my possum eating.

Even in captivity a possum's life expectancy is brief so they don't make good pets like dogs or cats. Possums however are the smartest marsupial in North America. However about the only trick that I was ever able to teach a possum was to roll over and play dead. They can perform that trick very well thank you.

I can not trap or kill without consequences where I live in NY. We've had ground hog problems and the fine was up to $5,000 I live on the edge of protected pine barrens and share the land with lots of critters.
I recently learned that opossums eat ticks so I have a new love for them.

Fire Ants also eat ticks, you want that I should send you a few colonies so that you can get a start? Come to think of it there is nothing so dead or too revolting for a possum to chow down on it. Old Pogo makes chickens look like an epicurean bon vivant by comparison.

Ground hogs are not predators....

I live in new your also, there's a statewide exception that allows trapping of predators around livestock. No season restrictions and you don't need a trapping license.

I'm on Long Island, suburbia at it finest, not a farm.
I piled stones all around the foundation of my shed & hayroom. Ran a low electric off my horse fence. We've been here 20+ years and have always had critters. The last few years they started pushing it and I finally got the ground hog out of my yard. He's my neighbors problem now!
