Opossum living in garage

I have picked up adult "dead" possums before to get them away from the dogs.. it's funny cause you know they are just putting on an act.. but I bet their heart is racing the entire time

Cute? I guess some would think so but they are nasty vile little scavengers that would gladly rip your hand off or the head of your chickens... they have done this to several of mine! They carry tons of disease as well. Not good to have around! We have trapped many and turned them over to animal control.

Before I becoame a chicken owner, I thought oppossums and racoons were adorable. I always felt sorry for they way people characterize opposums, calling them ugly, etc. I think hawks are gorgeous too. I even love wild birds and used to feed them...BUT NOW? Every possum, racoon, or hawk is a potential menace...wild birds carry a disease that could apparently kill my chickens, so I no longer want anything to do with them. It's amazing how one's perspective changes.

That don't make sense. You had an ax I bet. They works wonders cutting off the head. But I don't worry about them around here. My dog has killed 4 I know of. Beats me how he finds those gray things. He's found 3 armadillo's too. I had to shoot them. That is a creepy creature.

I don't kill them because I know if I have my chickens locked up tight for the night that no one will get harmed. So it's my fault if one gets killed not the opossum. The opossum is being a animal. S/he doesn't know better. They are just trying to survive and raise young. Besides if I killed s/he another would just soon replace it, so what is the point?

I operate on this idea also. They were here long before I put chickens in. I prefer to let all creatures live that I possibly can. Works for me.
