I have a resident opossum the likes to come on our porch and eat cat food. He also has taken interest in the chicken feed on the porch. Do I need to worry that he may try to get in the chicken pen? would a opossum hurt chickens? or are they just interested in the feed? I know they go for eggs but mine aren't laying yet

They will kill chickens. We had one getting into the coop and killing chickens years ago. My Dad finally got it. That was when I was a kid. The coops we have now, they can't get into. If you don't want to shoot them there are traps that catch them live and you can let them go far away in woods. I know some people who do that.

Invite them in for dinner

I trapped one last night and was planning to kill it this afternoon when I noticed at least 3 little pink tales sticking out of her pouch.

I ended up carrying her about a half mile from the house and turned her loose on the edge of a swamp

and I'll be right in front of you..!

I have a family of opossums that live less than 20 feet from my coops and they never mess around. But I bet if they went hungry they might consider chicken. If you don't have to eradicate, don't. Chances are they were there first and as a property owner/care taker the well-being of all creatures are the responsibility of such. The .22 should be a last resort. That's some medieval tactics.

Exactly.
