opossums are they a threat??

Genesis 1:28 (New International Version)

.28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

So opossum and racoons make good gumbo? I wish I read this thread yesterday. I caught 2 racoons in my RIR coop 2 nites ago at 2:30 AM. I introduced myself with Mr. Springfield .22 CB LONG. Now these 2 racoons are in my trash can waiting for Friday pick up. Any takers? Have at it.

Just for clarification purposes:

Opossums are North Americas only marsupial, not mammals.

Rabies in an opossum is super rare, the opossums blood temp is too low for rabies to thrive in, but if you get bitten by one and don't have the animal sent to the CDC for brain tissue testing, then health care officials are bound by law to make you undergo the treatment as a preventative measure.

If you were to actually contract rabies there is no cure.

The best prevetative measure I've found is a predator proof coop and run.

Regardless of how many predators you catch and kill, there are many more that you'll never even see on your property.

Yes, that is a live wild possum in my avatar.

With the wonders of a game cam, anyone can track nuisance pred visitors 24/7 in the coop area. After dispatching several opposums in the initial 3 months of use, it took another ~6 months until the game cam captured the image of another, which was also promptly eradicated. Proactive camera tracking of my coop area has absolutely resulted in longer periods of time in between visits of raccoons and oppossum. It also has resulted in more wild turkey sightings on my property over the past year.

Very cool idea BLUEY. I know you sleep better then I.
I have the memory of 2 weeks ago killing these two. One nite these two coons killed 10 of my chickens and only ate two. They kill to kill for fun. And I have no problem showing how I treat those who disrespect my birds.

Racoons do not kill for fun. Fun is a human perception. They may kill animals they do not eat for territorial, stealth, frenzy, or countless other instinctual reasons. I am sorry you lost your birds but killing two wild animals may not solve your shelter issues. Take a look as to how they got into your chickens coop for true resolution.

Wild animals are wild, not joy-killing murderers.
