Orange Tabby...He Stays and His Name is Finn (Update with Videos Dec 31)

You know the saying "Curiosity killed the cat"? There is a good reason for that. Some of our acreage is being turned into pasture, work commenced this afternoon. Finn had been inside all the time the guy was working after he got his equipment here, so when he finally went outside, he saw Cat Magnet near the back fencing sorting woodpiles and ran back there. The guy was using his bobcat so the backhoe was just sitting. Finn ran over all around it, sniffing and checking it out, then he climbed inside the bucket!

Thankfully, I've told Mark, the man who is working it, that if he sees an orange striped cat, it's not a stray, it's ours (or we're his, as is truly the case).

I know that Finn does eat mice. He was playing with a poor not-quite-dead one two days ago, throwing it in the air and hitting home runs with it. Finally, he settled down to eat it. Of course, he still wanted his kibble at supper time. He's doing his job for sure. Good boy. Except when he tries to be a feline construction accident.

Caught on game cam a few days ago. Cat surveying his kingdom.

I truly believe that kind of behavior is sanctioned in the Official Cat Manual. No open vehicle or container large enough for their head to fit through shall go uninvestigated. There might have been a mouse in that backhoe! Finn can hold his head up high at the next cat union meeting know he fulfilled his obligation. :)

Something similar happened today at our house. Our neighbor has a corvette and when he washes it he does so in the front yard (why I don't know). Anyway, when I got home from my day out with our grand daughter something caught my eye and made me take a second look at his open car and sure enough there was our Roux sitting on his front seat. I couldn't help but laugh and thought well I hope he hasn't vacuumed the interior yet.

Finn would probably have joined him in there.

A big THANK YOU to Peanutsmomma! I received the electric blanket today and it's warming up on Finn's condo as I write. I am sending you a small token of appreciation for your generosity so watch your mail for it at the end of the week or maybe Monday, depending on when I get it to the P.O. Who knew it would be so darn hard to find an electric blanket?! But, Angela (and Finn's lookalike, long distance pal, Roux) came to Finn's rescue. When his under-floor heating pad turns off after two hours, he won't be in the cold for the rest of the night, thanks to my friend.

He still loves to curl up in that crocheted bed on sunny, warm days. What a rotten feline!

Yay!!! I am so happy the blanket made it to you! You and Finn are most welcome my dear, it was my pleasure. Wow, Finn has a great set up there on your porch. I wouldn't be surprised if the "Cat Fairy" is taking notes and thinking about sending some more cats your way. lol

Just out of curiosity, when you had Finn neutered did the Vet venture to guess his age? We were lucky because Roux showed up at approximately 4 months old so we have had him since he was a kitten. He is only 4 years old now so we are hoping that we have him around a very long time.

Yes, the vet says he's probably around a year and a half old, or was in November. I suspected as much, the way his head had already developed that round tomcat look. So, where he was before is a huge mystery, not a dumped kitten, certainly. He may have an owner not far from here who wonders where their cat went, but I tried to find his owner. There is still a flyer up at the pet shop in town and there was on the county co-op bulletin board until recently. Three folks thought he was theirs but then realized he was just a lookalike. And he seems to have decided that this is his home now so I guess it is. Not sure what I'd do if someone popped up this late in the game and tried to claim him. They'd have to have some pretty decent proof of it.

Chances are if the old owners stepped forward to claim him he would rather stay with you and he might make his way back to you even if they took him home. He is probably receiving much better care from you than from his former owners. Since he "chose" you, he belongs to you and the Cat Magnet now. :)

It's my considered opinion that there is rarely such a thing as a "lost" cat. I believe they are pretty sure of where they are and where they want to be. It's possible for one to become lost running from a predator, I'm sure, but I think that is probably the exception. The one night he left and stayed gone, he had gone back to the mobile home across the semi-main road where he had stayed for a few days before he made his way up to us so he knows where he is and where he's been. He hasn't been gone since that night, though he will stay "unavailable" for several hours at a time, probably just positioned watching his prey on our wooded property rather than actually gone off somewhere.
