I ordered 25 cornish X straight run chicks from Ideal, and they just got here a few minutes ago. They were packed with 18 in one side of the box, and 7 in the other. At the post office, I could see no movement on the full side of the box, and when I opened it up there were 16 dead, with two almost dead. On the other side of the box were 7 vigorously chirping and running around babies.
I got them all under a heat lamp with water and food, etc., like I always do. I put the two nearly dead babies under the heat lamp as well to warm up. Now one is kind of half-alert, and every time it lifts its head up, it looks like a bobble-head chick. Is this indicative of a disease, or just weak? The other baby is still just lying on its side, showing no signs of perking up. It did open its eyes when I gave it a little sugar water and weakly swallowed.
Could there be a disease that killed chicks on one side of the box and not the other? There were ventilation holes, so air was exchanged between the two sides. Are these two chicks going to make the rest of my babies die???
Ideal is shipping more next Tuesday.
