Order your meat chickens now

I ordered 50 from Welp hatchery, and the first ship date on those was April 15... I think I need to place my other orders now...

Sign of the times I'm afraid.

It seems that more and more people are starting to raise their own.

The air base that I'm a Fire Fighter at was place on the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) list. Michele and I decided that is was high time to use our land to it's full potential and start keeping laying hens. After alot of research I decided on Australops and haven't looked back. They lay like clock work. We had been thinking about meat birds and I made the plunge today when we picked up 10 Cornish X at the local F&HS (Farm and Home Supply). I spoke with the person in charge of ordering chicks and she said that normally chicks don't sell as fast ad they have this year. I guess it has been more traditional farmers that have been buying them in the past, and not so many sudo farmers.

While saving money was iniailly my driving force. . . Now that I have had my own laying chickens, and had the best eggs since I was a kid (my family had farm chickens growing up) I think quality is more important than just saving money.

I'd prefer to save a few bucks but, so what if it costs me a bit more to raise my own meat birds. . . The peace of mind knowing the meat is safe to eat and the better tasting meat is well worth it.

In my efforts to safe a few bucks and stick to the man a few of my friends have also started keeping laying hens and are looking at keeping meat birds as well. They aren't looking back either.

So goes the revolution.
