Welocme to BYC!!! It is an aweosme forum (the BEST in the world) and has a great comminity!!! Hope you have a great time and learn A LOT!

I have some questions

1. Once the chicks are big enough to go in there hen house and yard, do I leave a light on at night in the hen house? or do they prefer the dark?

2. If I put a automatic door opener on the hen house how do they know when to go in before they get locked out at dust?

3. on days when it is suppose to rain all day do I leave them in there hen house or let them out?

WHY NO ONE IS ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS????????????????????

that's WHAT I THOUGHT YOU DO ON THIS SITE.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You are posting on the New Members forum which is more or less a greeting forum and after a day or two people may not see your posts because of the high number of members joining this time of year... if you have specific questions you are better off to post them in the appropriate forum to be sure and get answers. (ie, Managing Your Flock etc https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/2/managing-your-flock )

1. Once the chicks are big enough to go in there hen house and yard, do I leave a light on at night in the hen house? or do they prefer the dark?
No, it is generally recommended you do not leave a light on all the time. Chickens need a dark period ... you never "have" to keep a light on and the only real need for supplemental light is in the winter if you want the birds to lay better, and then you only need about 14 hours of light total (nice article from the Learning Center) https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chickens-winter-egg-laying-and-lighting... the exception to this might be if your coop is really dark, then you want to have a light on mimicking the daylight hours so the chickens are more willing to go in and out of the coop.

2. If I put a automatic door opener on the hen house how do they know when to go in before they get locked out at dust?
Most openers have a timer, just be sure to set it after dark / the hens would go in, even then some may occasionally get shut out... chickens will not learn to go in "early" just because the door is going to shut. You might like to check out some of the threads on coop doors, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/740659/ador1-automatic-coop-door/0_20

3. on days when it is suppose to rain all day do I leave them in there hen house or let them out?
You can let them out, chickens don't mind a little rain, and actually seem to learn that the bugs come out when it rains, so are perfectly happy to get wet... just make sure they have a draft free dry coop and they will go in and out if the rain gets too much for them.
