Ordering eggs online for the first time!

Well.. I finally understand the 'stinky' egg thing. Candled at night before bed.. nothing. Woke up, went to turn the eggs and Eww! One of the eggs smelled funny.. I turned off the light and candled it and was shocked to see all this dark stuff floating around in there every time I turned the egg.. I put the flashlight down and took the egg carefully outside and tossed it lightly over the fence and IT EXPLODED!

My goodness! How surprising that one could go THAT BAD so quickly. And it looks like three might be developing under the hen. Candling again tonight to make sure and to smell those eggs also.. Hmm.. Will broody hens kick out bad eggs? Or will they explode under the hen? Either way.. if something stinks I'm not taking a chance..

My broody kicked out 2 eggs. One was infertile and the other was a quitter. Smart girl.

Oh and I ordered 12 cochin eggs, got 13. They arrived in perfect condition even though they were riding around on the mail truck all day. My mail comes at 5pm! We were rearranging the eggs on the turner tonight and took another peek. Looks like 10 are hopefuls. I'll be happy with just one.

And of course I keep looking at the egg auctions, for future reference of course.

Oooh! I hope you have lots of chicks soon! I've been saying since before my eggs got here I'd be pleased with one chick and super happy with three... well..

I candled mine, three have definate veining tonight!!

And another one was cool last night, sitting just out from under the broody hen when I candled yesterday has a spot in the yolk today, not like a chick spot just a spot.. Not sure why but it was under her tonight and.. I must be crazy. I smelled it, Repeatedly.. Yes.. I think I've lost some of my marbles.. Sitting in the dark in a chicken coop, trying to see if an egg smells bad or not..

Hmm.. Oh well. Who needs marbles anyway?

The quitter egg she kicked out was one in which I could clearly see a moving black thing. I actually thought that one would be my only successful one. The others were just getting darker and denser. Of course I know now that those were the ones that were developing properly. Apparently the one with the little moving blob was not right and Francesca must have known. How good is a chicken's sense of smell I wonder? I not only found it cold and out of the nest, but somehen had kicked it all the way out into their yard, rolled it down the ramp and out of the enclosed run! I guess the ladies were afraid of an explosion and wanted it as far away as possible?! We cracked it open and there was a little embryo but significantly underdeveloped for the day of incubation they were at.

As for the smelling of the eggs...I make my kids do it! My nose is stopped up - ALLERGIES!

And about those marbles...mine are long lost! (As evidenced by this chicken thing)

Well.. an update two days from hatch date. Went to pick up the hen to make her go use the bathroom and eat and drink some and oh my goodness two chicks fall out from under her wings!!! TWO VERY FUZZY CHICKS!!! One egg is left unpipped and I've been growled at and pecked at by Betty for moving her off the nest but the chicks are just too cute! I'll post some pictures in a few minutes!
