I just ordered from Hoovers Hatchery, and I’ve never had chicks or chickens before but we decided to go all out this year!

I ordered 5 light brahmas, 5 brown leghorns, and 5 barred rocks. I did not order a roo but plan to get him when “chick days” come back at the farm supply stores or get one off of Facebook. I am excited, they should be here the week of 2.15.23!
Wise decision to add the roo later. From reading a lot about roosters , I’d like to tip you to buy /or get for free a rooster thats not much bigger/heavier than your smallest breed. Has prooven to be friendly towards people and is preferably over a year old.
A barred rock rooster is maybe best if you ever like to breed BR yourself and sell the surplus BR with value. Do check this info or ask in a new thread, before buying if you want to be sure.

😍If the carton is a bit slippery, its best to put an old towel on it . Such cloth is easier for the chicks to walk and you have less chance of injured legs.
And also more cozy /warmer to sleep on. Or do you have another area for the chicks to sleep with nesting material?

I do the cardboard for first 2 days so they don't try to eat wood shavings. Then I remove cardboard

I find ordering new chicks so much fun. I have a small backyard (front yard) flock and just ordered 4 new chicks for the spring. I am excited to learn what you ordered/plan to order or are excited for the 2023 year. I ordered a salmon faverolle, a bielefeder, a buff orpington and a lakeside egger. What did you get or are planning to get?
I ordered New Hampshire Reds, Orpingtons, Delaware, Welsummers, Australorps.
