Ordering this late in the yr from Ideal..

This past spring I ordered 4 pullets from them. Two buff orphingtons and two rhode island reds. When I opened the box at the post office I almost fainted! That little box was packed!!! I think I ended up with 16 extra little babies. I freaked

I never thought I would end up with that many chicks. I didnt have room for them all. So I gave away for free all the extras. Throughout the whole time raising them I had my doubts if they were really girls.

I had also bought 2 EEs from the feed store who bought all pullets from Ideal. But in the end I ended up with all hens. Thank goodness!

I finally ordered from them earlier. All bantams, but I ordered 2 light brahma's, 2 blue cochin's, 1 black frizzle and 1 white frizzle. I will keep one brahma and one cochin for sure. But Im not sure if I want to keep both frizzles. I had to order an extra chick to make my total come out right. I order two of the brahma's and cochins hoping that at least ONE of each will be a hen.

If you order straight run vs. pullets or cockerels only ,then your ratio of males to females is going to be about 50/50. If you think about it, straight run is about the same as human pregnancy, you have a 50/50 shot of having one or the other.
If you are ordered sexed pullets, Ideal states their accuracy rate is 90%. I don't know if they still do, but they used to refund the cost of any male chicks above and beyond the 10% in a sexed order.
If they have to include "packing peanut" males for warmth, then chances are very good the packing peanuts will be males; since that's one use for the extra males leftover from sexing. If you don't want the packing peanuts included you need to let them know that at the time you order. You will have to pay a small charge (a dollar or two) for shipping insurance.

great, thanks for the info! I didn't order anything strait run, so I will hope for the best.

I did however just email them to see if I could add a few frizzles to my order!!!

What color do you think I should get if they agree?

At first I wanted black then white. Then I just ordered both and said the heck with it I'll decide when they get here. I wonder if I should email then and ask if I could get mostly hens? But since they only sell st run, I wonder if they will just

maybe I will take my chances and get the mix strait run and hope for the best!

I hate the painted drawings of the birds........I want to see the real thing!!

Yea me too. But I always open another window and do a yahoo/google search. That why I can see what they really look like. Thats when I just had to have a blue cochin.

Lol, no I missed that one. But by searching all the different birds I found the one color I love in almost any bird is the Blue. Theyre just gorgeous!

Edited to add:

Now I just need to come up with a coop/tractor for these chicks. Im trying to figure out the best way to house 3 maybe 4 bantams in a tractor as there permant housing. Something thats light weight, easy to move, not too big and safe.
