Ordinance Preventing Chickens...

Hi Eli, I too am a resident of Portage, IN without telling you to much I know there are quite a few people who have chickens in town. In fact I will tell you I have 8 in my backyard as I am typing this. I am with you in this but I was always told it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission. If you do get something more going let me know, please.

Hello and welcome to BYC! I'm fortunate to live in a "right to farm" community. However, I believe that if you have adequate room to maintain a small flock you should be able to do so legally. I commend you for taking the lead in changing the ordinance in your community. In addition to networking with like minded residents, perhaps draw up a petition and gather signatures to present to your town council. Best of luck with this.

Hello, my name is Eli and I am new here. I actually signed up in hopes that I may be able to get through to other people who live in Portage Indiana. A few weeks ago I emailed the city of Portage (Indiana) to see if they would be loosening up on the restrictions that prevent Portage residence from owning chickens (ducks and rabbits) and I got a pretty quick response back from them saying "not at this time". My hope is that if I am able to get through to enough people who also live in Portage Indiana and we bombard them with enough calls and emails about this and bring up the fact that we are in a world wide pandemic due to the virus, which has caused farmers to destroy crops, milk, and eggs, because the distribution line has been broken that we may be able to get this ordinance changed.
So, if there are any others out there from Portage Indiana please let me know and if there are enough of us we may be able to get that ordinance removed or changed.
Hey bud, also from portage Indiana...the argument I’ve had with the town council and whoever responds on the phone/email from town hall, is that there isn’t any language in the code of ordinances anywhere stating that chickens and ducks specifically aren’t allowed

the only info I’ve found is a nwi times article. Now...I could just not be seeing the bigger picture here, but how can they “enforce” a rule that isn’t clearly stated in their list of rules? Not to mention who’s enforcing it?I’d say as long as your neighbors are cool with it and you don’t have any roosters or loud obnoxious breeds of hens running around...who is it hurting? If no one has a reason to complain I don’t see how they’d even know.

I’m also new here and live in Portage IN, so sorry if there’s some dual posting going on. But I am Very interested in pushing for a city change.
It seems almost absurd that it was supposed to be voted in and then just got left on the back burner and forgotten. Apparently at one point enough people wanted the change it almost made it through haha.
