hi I thought we could have chickens then learned our Town is under the ordinance rules of a larger city. The Town had been working for a year to get out from under the city zoning but until then, I now am working with the planner of the CITY to get the ordinance changed to allow chickens. We are in a mostly ag area, lots are about 1-5 acres and there are lots of farm land. MY question, is what is reasonable to put forward as an ordinance request for chickens in a community like I have described? The planner seems open to suggestions. Thanks, Lori

Forest Grove, Oregon:

The new law allows up to four chickens on a 5,000-square-foot lot, with an additional chicken allowed for each 2,000 square feet of space. Chicken coops cannot be built within 20 feet of a neighboring house and must be at least 5 feet from any property line.

They decided against requiring permits because they couldn't afford the admin costs related to permitting and enforcing...so we're kind of on the honor system. Also, NO roosters.
