Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Yah, I have already decided that they will have to live in pots. I do want to try some (indoor I think) Banana Trees to. They will join my potted forest of Pomegranates and Meyers Lemons...

They're not grafted. Maybe someday I will try that (course first I have to get my hands on a tree to graft from). My mom said a friend of hers got fruit off her avacado tree she keeps under a grow light and it was one she grew from a pit

I love avocados and would be thrilled to get some from my trees, but I mostly grew them because I like plants! I started a bunch as an expiriment to see how many would take... Then I suddenly had 5 trees taking over my kitchen. Now I have 7 more pits (of a new variety...its round and super easy to peel) in the window. I am hoping a few of them sprout cuz I would love some of that kind.
I have heard that they need to be grafted to produce, but that doesn't make much sense. Plants WANT to seed. If they didn't, they would die out. Many trees need polinators of different varieties and I was thinking maybe that's what the grafting is about. I don't know. I am not an expert, I'm just a plant addict with a big greenhouse and some sunny windows. I am cultivating a small jungle in my greenhouse so I have a nice place to be in the dreary winter months. I plan to soak up sunlight with my plants and enjoy green leafy things (and if I am lucky some tomatoes too!) throughout the cold season. I get super lethargic and moody from November to February every year and I am hoping that the greenhouse will help me offset this. For me fruit is a happy byproduct of what I am after!

Oh I just took a class on this at the Mother Earth Fair. I hope I get this right. Most store bought produce is a hybrid and has sterile seeds (intentionally). In order to save seeds and get a crop next year you have to use heirloom seeds. Even store bought seed packets (unless heirloom) produce sterile fruit/veggies so you have to re-buy seeds each year. It was a great class, wish I took better notes though.

We used to love starting avocado plants as kids. They make the best house plants. Absolutely gorgeous

First, a silly question but - where does one purchase heirloom seeds? And will anyone possibly have some at the swap (with good storage instructions?)

Second,

My baby serama roo "Fence" was trying to crow while I am on the computer - oh my gosh, too funny - bad squeak with full neck stretch - did I mention SQUEAK (not crow)

My little serama, Angus, was the same way! He is getting better, but a squeakie crow comes out once in awhile. I look at it, like a boy who's voice is changing. LOL Gets squeakie before it goes low!

I am really, really tempted to get a Serama Roo...If I could find one that crowed just loud enough that it could be contained in the house???? There was a guy advertising on Craigs list here...but when I e-mailed him and asked if I could come see them...he never e-mailed me or called me back. ;-( I keep telling myself that I have 5-6 chicks coming in about 3 weeks...and I should be patient and settled in before I start thinking about ADDING more...and I keep telling myself I should actually see a Serama IN PERSONS before I decide to get one....but they are just so darn adorable.

I have 10 Serama roos in the house...all very containable

I have Seramas available...an 8 week old pair and 4 week olds (I'm pretty sure the hatching gods blessed me again with 4 girls and 3 roos

) and I will be bringing lots to the swap. I'm setting 18 frizzled, smooth and silkied eggs tomorrow. You can come see them anytime you'd like!

And yes, one of Laurie's roosters is trying to crow right now...Donovan. Cracks me up!

Not a silly question at all. I have seen them in Wilco. They are just marked on the package that they are heirloom. You could also do a web search for heirloom seeds...

I have heirlooms coming out of my ears. What are you looking for?
