Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Richard.Zoller :

We will be at the Fall swap barring weather of course and how late in the fall it will be. We likely will be bringing Americauna's from summer hatch and others from summer hatch TBD*. Also might consider bringing a generator for running heat lamps if it is cool out and if we have youngings.

Not sure about wants yet. It is still early LOL.

Looking forward to having you! Lol it is anything like our last fall swap, you'll need those generators to run A/C! It will most likely be late September (after school is well underway) or very early October (1st-2nd weeks latest). Anything past that we really get iffy. I think we need to start throwing out ideas for the location this week. I know Zanna's farm is on the plate and the Benton County Fairgrounds. Pros and cons for each....depends on what you want this swap to be.

They're snugglers! I had Babette and Nuria in my arms for the longest time last night, and again this morning. They're just so gentle that I ended up putting them in with some of my babies, who have snuggled right up to the girls. Can you say "big sister?".

And I hope your girls are ok? The soap is very mild and shouldn't cause anything too bad, other than maybe some funny tasting eggs?

Lol guess I should have clarified....my daughter's got into my soap, not my girlies

Those two are snugglers - all of my chicks from this winter really have been. I spent a lot of time with them everyday since hatching so maybe that was it? I'm glad you are enjoying them and they are fitting in.

Oh, good! You said your girls and then asked about my girls and the only girls I have are the chickens.....sooo.....I thought you had hens that were going to be laying bubbles! My bad.....

What what do you expect? She's soooooo cute! Yeah, I think I did a good job. I sold some of your soap and a roo!

BTW, my DH thought I said the black cochin was a roo. I could have bought her from you!

She laid an egg at the swap, so I'm positive my black cochin is a girl! Maybe I'll bring her in the fall....

Well that only gives a week! Can't believe it's near the end of April already.
First question - What is involved in using the fairgrounds?
For me, it seems like a completely obvious choice for a swap in this area. There are plenty of pros: There is plenty of room for parking, plenty of room for shade, there's power, water, restrooms... plus if you want publicity, it's quite easy to direct people to the fairgrounds. Should I also point out that there's a campground right next door that has hookups and tent sites? The cons would be if a fee for use. (Of course there's a cost to use the campground)

2nd question - How does the poultry testing work? My daughter did all the testing at the County Fair this past year, do we do something like that at the swap?

Sorry for the delay. I had the reply all typed out and then the site went down

Everything you said is definitely a pro as well as the free advertising we will get for using the facilities - probably the big board (unless we get beat out by something bigger) - and their online calender. We also have several businesses who are willing to get involved if we host it there and just the fact that the fairgrounds gets so much traffic on a daily basis is huge. The drop in traffic will be a lot more than it even was this time. It was mentioned on the Eastern Oregon swap thread about the popularity of poultry in the Bend area....well, poultry is really popular in there area as well so I think the interest will be great. The Corvallis Saturday Market will still be going on downtown so people will be out and about. We also do not need any permits or licenses to sell our stuff or have our animals there. The lady said "whatever you want to do as long as it's legal" is fine with them. They have events like this (not poultry, but swaps) all the time. Another pro is we will have a reserved spot. The cons would we do have to pay (I have that covered along with the liability insurance required. In the past everyone has always donated to this fee at the swap) and it's not along I-5. However, neither was this last one so I don't feel that is an issue any longer (it used to be). Another one would be we won't be able to have any alcohol there lol like we did at this past one. That is not really too big of con, but something we need to be aware of - no booze

The poultry testing has nothing to do with us or our birds. OSU does poultry testing at a nearby facility and they can't conduct those tests if other poultry is in the area. They finished testing April 15 and won't start again for 6 months. Matt at the Biohazard facility told me just to let him know our dates and they will work around us in the fall (another reason to get a date set - common courtesy) which I though was pretty cool and really nice of them.

Wow, that's sound really pretty! I love little turkeys. They have them at the feed store once a season and they are just too cute.

Nah, just your average turkeys. I don't know much about the breeds, just that they are cute. I think Bourbons is the main thing they get in
