Well, the swans are here! They are the most beautiful creatures! They are about 5 weeks old, grey powder-puff furry (not feathered yet), slate grey legs and bills. They are delicate and fragile. They are soooooo soft! They are like rabbits with long necks. hehe

I adore them. I think they are a male and female, which means I will need another pair to mate them since they are siblings. hehe. You thought your chicken math was bad!

They eat lettuce, it's very cute.

I did not notice till I got them home that they have a bit of an upper respiratory thing! This sucks! I hope I can get it under control and avoid spreading it. I never would have brought them home if I had noticed it beforehand! Anyone with advise, please feel free!!

I have started them on antibiotics.

I consider myself to be an organic farmer. I have never used antibiotics on my animals. However... I refuse to loose my precious birds and so I dosed them. Now I have to explain to all my customers how my standards have been compromised. That is the least of it if I do not loose birds.

I still love them! I am just concerned for their wellfare.

They are beautiful and wonderful. I was going to take them to their Aunt Daze's place for pictures tomorrow, but if they are sick I do not want to get near anyone with birds!!
 
Don't feel like you've compromised your values! Organic farming is not supposed to be about denying care. The research and chemicals and antibiotics of our lifetime are a gift, just one we don't want to use unwisely. I think that's why "organic" has become so huge, because too many for too long abused this research.

So are those your pictures floating around on fb? Zoomummzy posted some pictures - TOO CUTE!

On a related note, what do y'all use for mites? I've been using the Ivermectin pour-on (5 mg/ml), 0.5 ml for LF, 0.25 ml for bantam. It seems to be somewhat effective, but I would like to have NO problems this summer. Mites only seem to be a problem here June through August, the months when it usually stays above freezing.

I struggle with mites every spring/summer. Last summer, I got so fed up with them that I spent 6 straight hours dusting every single chicken (I have a lot lol) with Sevin. Not only did they not have any mites after that experience, I didn't either
